1. O breeze of the east wind, you have reminded me of the old days in the valley,

    And stirred longings that tore my heart apart.

  2. So if you revive one dead from separation and burning anguish,

    Through love's slaying you have revived me as I wished.

  3. For ever since I parted from those dear to my soul,

    And was given distance in place of nearness to them,

  4. My eyelids have forsaken night's sleep upon my beds,

    And in my sleeplessness I have become a companion to al-Suha.

  5. So, O you there, drawing near to that sanctuary,

    When you make the pale camels kneel in that valley,

  6. Then call out there to the dwellers: “You have lodged in my heart

    Fuel for a blaze, so the embers have become my bed.

  7. So at night I could not turn toward my bed;

    Shall I slumber while fires are the stuffing of my pillow?”

  8. May God preserve the days at the bend of al-Liwa,

    And a night in which union banished my sleep.
