You witnessed Yourself in us, though the Self is one—
You beheld your own self in us, one,
manifold, endowed with attributes and names.
Yet manifold, endowed with attributes and names.
And within You, after all our multiplicity, we witnessed
And in you, after our multiplicity, we beheld
one Essence, wherein the seen and the seer became one.
An essence through which the seen and the seer became one.
You are the First, before appearing to us,
So you are the First, before appearing to us,
and You are the Last for the distant, far-removed one.
And you are the Last for the far-removed, distant one.
You are the Inward, in beholding the Essence as one,
And hidden in the witnessing of the essence is its One,
and the Outward, distinguished through names.
And manifest through distinctions made by names.
You are the One who secretly prompts what I do not utter,
You are the one who imparts a secret I do not speak of,
and You are my speech and the listener to my whispered communion.
And you are my speech and the listener to my whispered confidences.
