فجاء على قصدي وقصدتم الأمر
You betrayed me; but for betrayal, I would have had no excuse.
You betrayed me, and if not for the betrayal, I'd have no excuse
Thus it served my purpose, while you meant the bitterer outcome.
You intended it, though it went against my purpose

فما ضاق لي يوماً ولا لكم صدر
You found room for aversion, and so did I;
You found room for harm, and so did I
so neither my breast nor yours ever felt constricted.
No day was ever too narrow for me or for you

هجرتم بحمد الله إذ طاب لي الهجر
So I do not complain of your weariness, since you
I do not complain of boredom from you
abandoned me—praise be to God—when abandonment had grown sweet to me.
For you left, by God's grace, when separation pleased me

If you claim endurance without us, then likewise
If you call for patience, so
patience came to us without claims, just as we wished.
It came to us without calling, as we desire patience

And if you give thanks for separation's decree, then separation
If you thank the wisdom of distance, to intention

Upon us the granting that gratitude cannot establish

And I had thought patience tasted bitter,
I thought endurance bitter in taste
but once I tasted it, I knew it was passion that was bitter.
But when I tasted it, I knew desire is the bitter one

صحونا جميعاً وانجلى ذلك السكر
So be as you wish, for we are as we wish;
Be as you wish, for we are as we desire
we have all sobered, and that intoxication has lifted.
We are all awake, and that intoxication is gone

How often I was entranced by a figure there and a face—
How many were lost there, and morning
a bough, yet no bough; a full moon, yet no full moon.
With neither branch nor morning, neither branch nor moon

And if Zayd turned you away from union with us,
If Zeid's turning you from our union
then you did nothing wrong; Amr turned us away likewise.
You missed nothing, so did Amr bar us

And if you have been made to forget the pledge, then ask,
If you've forgotten the pact, ask
to be told whether it was ever mentioned.
To inform you, did a day of it pass without mention?

Passion has run its course in us and in you; we are all

No evil in a matter we knew with you
we mean to you, until the hidden and the open became one.
Until the secret and the open were equal

How many nights whose darkness gloom didn't spoil
and how many a night of estrangement was untouched by dawn.
How many nights the dawn didn't mar with separation

So that faithfulness brought you weariness;
Then that loyalty bores you
so no harm: treachery is this faithless one's nature.
No matter, betrayal's character is betrayal

But only separation meets your abandonment
save abandonment—no stinging reproach, nor foul speech.
No reproach passes, nor abandonment
