The reproacher softened at what I suffer because of you, and pitied me,

when he saw you capriciously turn away from your lovesick lover.

You unraveled the cord of my affection after it had grown strong,

and how often you said, 'May whoever breaks it cease to be!'

Where is the faithfulness we expected, and what is

this estrangement that arose after it?

And ah—a sigh from one whose chest is stricken by your abandonment!

And whoever tastes abandonment by the one he longs for sighs.

I hoped, on the day of his departure, that he would linger for me,

so I might complain of some of what I suffer, but he did not linger.

And how often I complained of what I suffer from him, yet he did not

take pity on my abasement, nor turn toward me, nor care.

And how often I swore that I would not reproach him,

and I am not the first lovesick lover to break an oath in love.

Alas for the lover! Whenever his beloveds turn away

for a day, he dies; and when they reunite with him, he is resurrected.

    فسجعها بين أثناء النشيد رثا

    He died, and the gray doves wailed over him in grief;

so their cooing amid the strains of song was a lament.
