فقضىand so met اصطباريmy patience بعدهafter him نحباdeath
I would ransom the one who bade me farewell yesterday;
I give my soul to the one who bid me farewell yesterday
And after he left, my patience met its death.
After him, my patience was spent grieving
وسرتand traveled by night بهwith him فيin البحرthe sea جاريةa vessel
سوداءblack يسبقoutstrips سيرهاits passage الشهباthe shooting stars
And a vessel bore him by night across the sea,
I walked with him in the black sea
Black, its passage outstripping the shooting stars.
With shooting stars leading our way
لوأنif it were that حكمdominion over البحرthe sea طوعsubject to يديmy hand

If dominion over the sea lay in my hand,
If I could control the sea by my will
I would seize every ship by force.
I would seize every ship by force
