Is the full moon aught save the veil that shrouds her face?
Or dawn anything but what her smile reveals?
Or dawn save what her smile reveals?

its glow—with its blaze in the lover's heart?
Her whiteness and the heart of lovers is her brazier.

أقامت بقلبي إذ أقام بحبها

فدارتها قلبي وداري خيامها
She dwelt in my heart when it dwelt in love for her;
She took up residence in my heart when she took up love's abode,
so her dwelling is my heart, and my dwelling her tents.
So my heart revolved around her and my tent about her home.

An oryx of the dunes—if only she could be caught!
A glance that would be snatched if it were possible to seize it,
And beauty's Kaaba—if only one could touch her!
A beauty that would be sought if it were possible to take hold of it.

When she removes the veil and daybreak arises,
the sun of day is cleared of its clouds.
The sun's morning clouds disperse.

My utmost fortune is to kiss her dust,
The end of my fortune is to kiss her dust,
while the veil's least fortune is to kiss her.
The easiest fortune for the veil is to cling to her.

Under the sway of her face’s spear and her perfect stature.

For all time fearful of eclipse is its perfection.

When the doves coo in the waving branch.

Are always drunk with meaning and allusion ever drunk.

And the night she visited, the Pleiades were as though
in arrangement and beauty, her necklace and her smile.
They were a necklace clasped round her neck and smile.

And she greeted me, reviving what her aversion had killed,
She greeted, so she brought to life what her disdain had killed,
and she replied: in her greeting lay my soul's return.
She turned her face, so she restored the soul to well-being.

I said, ‘And is my affliction anything but her languor?’
“What ails you?” I said: “Is it not lovesickness for you?”

So she revealed her mouth’s pearls in a dimple -
its blossoms appearing as their bud-sheaths split open.
Light burst forth and her veil was lifted from it.

She sent it far, no! - a young pearl she protects
in ruby shells, their seal the darkness of her lips.
With shells of ruby, sealing their water.

My life was like hers - she held its reins.
