She appeared, though her veils had been drawn over her.
Her veil was lifted and curtains drawn around,
Were she unveiled, her light would take the place of veils.
Though I travel far, her light needs no unveiling.

وليس الغني المحض إلا فقيرها
Veiled; none has honor save her neighbor,
Modest, seeking glory only through her neighbor,
And none is truly rich but her pauper.
Yet the purely rich are still her beggars.

She appeared but hid her jewelry from sight,
By her radiance, as full moons [efface?] the nights.
Her brilliance cloaking the nights in their cycles.

Even if their passage among humankind is unseen.
Though no trace of her passing lingers among men.

We crossed the desert, fearing not the perils -
Of the plains of the wastes before her and their rugged ground.
Its easy sands or rough terrain before her.

A prophet undaunted by the desolate wastes, we are all
For the sake of [unclear words], our [eyelids?] at peace.
Enraptured souls longing for her cool waters.

تبيت وليلى بالحمي تسزيرها
Can a yearning soul fear dangers?
Can danger deter a soul filled with yearning
It passes the night while Layla, in the sanctuary, [invites it to visit?].
Who keeps vigil whilst she wraps the night around her?

I say to my friends, it is as if the barren land
Pages whose lines were traced by riding beasts:
Were pages where she wrote with the mounts her lines.

[Keep traversing?] the desert's breadth by travel and night journeying;
Tread the expanse, this is Layla's enclosure,
For this is Layla's sanctuary, and those are her dwellings.
And over there, her dwellings.

She called us and we responded, coming to her
Naked as the dead whose resurrection through her had come.
As paupers roused when she signals awakening.

We came to her bareheaded, because she is
Bowed bareheaded in the dust that glittered joyously,
Our wealth; in deepest poverty we visit her.
Her coffers increased and her happiness overbrimmed.

Over a timid man like me who came to seek her refuge.

My eyes are blind to all but visions of her, such devotion
Over a fearful one like me, who came seeking her protection.
Fulfills those who attain her rewards.

Glad tidings to you, my eye; here is her dust.

For no eyelid where her powder has swirled has been wretched.
And the presence of hearts is the mark of their sincerity.

If traversing the earth on foot towards her were possible,
Whose rewards are paid in full to whoever comes to her.
By God, I would hasten persistently to her.

For the sign of hearts' sincerity is their presence.
Fulfilled by kissing her soil to pay vows sworn.

No harm could come to souls that she replenishes.
