O night, the cup's mouth embraced me all night

within you—may my heart's dark core and my pupils ransom you!

If I, a dead, lovesick man, was revived, then surely

losing you has killed what little life you left in me.

You granted me a fawn, revealed to the tale-bearers by

his brow and the sweet perfume wafting from him.

In a garden, whenever his supple form swayed,

the branches there veiled themselves in leaves.

And all night he quenched, with the cool sweetness of

his dusky lips, the burning his cheeks had kindled in me.

And I spent the night embracing the full moon, as with my hand

I looped that hair's black serpent around my neck.

And he came hurrying with it, red, opposite

his face, so they appeared as two suns on one horizon.

Virgin wine—his front teeth gave it its bubbles, just as

his cheeks cast upon it the redness of twilight.

And he said, “Take it, if you wish, from my goblet,

or from the dark tint of my dusky lip, or from my pupils.

Each is wine; and if you doubt it, here is my lip,

and here is the cup: choose what you wish, and taste.”

Oh, what a wondrous night I spent!

The sun was my evening draught, and the full moon embraced me.
