Yonder is the Tigris—go drink! And here is the Nile.
Beyond these two, a thirsty wanderer has no further relief.

These are not the signs of one who has known love
and been grieved by a smooth-cheeked beauty, shimmering with modesty.

Do not lie: this is not how we,
the people of ardent longing, recognize a love-stricken man.

Leave passion to its people, for they are
more entitled to it: you are indeed an outsider in love.

its valley, encamped between the two sarh trees?

And the tribe was pressing to depart, while my lifeblood
flowed in anguish at departure's approach.

Longing blazed, and between my ribs
was an ailing heart in which passion cried aloud.

And the least I suffered of love's burdens,
beyond longing itself, was a reproacher and a faultfinder.
