Yonder is the Tigris—go drink! And here is the Nile.

Beyond these two, a thirsty wanderer has no further relief.

If cool water, to your mind, is what quenches

    passion's heat—not the honey-sweet, white-toothed mouth—

how strange you are! You claim thirst, yet in

your eyelids are torrents of flowing tears.

And withdraw from noon's scorching blast and heat,

though your breast holds burning anguish and thirst.

These are not the signs of one who has known love

and been grieved by a smooth-cheeked beauty, shimmering with modesty.

Do not lie: this is not how we,

the people of ardent longing, recognize a love-stricken man.

Leave passion to its people, for they are

more entitled to it: you are indeed an outsider in love.

Have you forgotten me on the day at al-Aqiq, when we were in

its valley, encamped between the two sarh trees?

And the tribe was pressing to depart, while my lifeblood

flowed in anguish at departure's approach.

Longing blazed, and between my ribs

was an ailing heart in which passion cried aloud.

And the least I suffered of love's burdens,

beyond longing itself, was a reproacher and a faultfinder.

Why not follow a seasoned lover in his longing,

who has wrestled with sorrows, though he is gaunt?

Did you think love was easy? Wretched is what

    you imagined, you madman!

O sister of Sa'd, you have laid down a law

that no messenger among the prophets ever laid down.

You made shedding my blood lawful, though it was never decreed

by the Revelation, the Torah, or the Gospel.

And you shortened my eyelids, so they never meet,

and lengthened my night, so the suffering is long.

And you kindled a fire in my breast and prevented me

from quenching it with tears, though they pour in torrents.

I obey your command as best I can; whatever

burden of love you lay on me shall be borne.

I swear by disobeying the reproacher, for it is

an oath that bears witness to true fidelity.

I am tender toward you, even if you turn away,

and this morning keep ties with you, even if you sever them.

My two companions, love has gone its way,

and sound judgment has come, and its word is accepted.

I confide my troubles to you both: what do you advise

for your brother? His own judgment is feeble.

Long have I dwelt in humiliation, content

with a lowly lot, and obscurity has overtaken me.

And now my shoulder is jostled in the station of

high honor by a base, clumsy, ignorant man.

Every day my calm is shaken

by a terror that strikes the senses numb,

from one I knew whose heart, whenever I was mentioned,

would almost leave his breast in fear.

That is only because there no longer remains among

these people a noble, generous chief

to whom a seeker of refuge may turn, and who proves

an excellent defender, whose might is hoped for.

The two said, 'Hush! Here is Ibn Hamid, the one

beyond whom no hopeful seeker can hope for more.

Make for him: you will find the sea surging, overflowing,

and the lion roaring in majesty and charging.

And lodge with him: you will make your mount kneel at the edge of the courtyard of one

whose protection no guest has faulted at evening.

Surely a man whom the Mighty One has pledged to aid

yet who now makes peace with his fate is truly abject.'
