What of that noble honor being violated?
What is that noble figure being wounded?
And the blood flowing around it in fury?
Blood flowing from anger around it?
ومنand who الذيthe one who سامsubjected النفوسsouls مهانةhumiliation
ومن الذي سام النفوس مهانة
يأبىrefuses ويأنفهاand scorns it الذلولthe docile creature الأعجمspeechless ؟
يأبى ويأنفها الذلول الأعجم ؟
And who is it who subjected souls to humiliation
And who insulted the souls meanly
that even a docile, speechless beast refuses and scorns?
That foreign humiliation refused and disdained?
منthrough كلمwords ماcertain عوراءfoul تكشفlay bare جهرةopenly
من كلم ما عوراء تكشف جهرة
ويهانand is dishonored منهاby them ماwhat يصانis safeguarded ويكرمand is honored
ويهان منها ما يصان ويكرم
Through certain foul words that openly lay things bare,
Who spoke of hidden shame uncovered
and by them, what is guarded and honored is dishonored;
And violated what is protected and honored?
وكرامةand dignity يشتطgoes to extremes فيin تحقيرهاbelittling it
وكرامة يشتط في تحقيرها
نذلa scoundrel حقيرbase القلبthe heart لاnot يتأثمfeels guilty
نذل حقير القلب لا يتأثم
and dignity whose degradation is carried to excess
And the dignity that is excessively degraded
by a scoundrel, base at heart, who feels no guilt.
By a miserable, mean-hearted person without remorse?
فيin أيماwhat بلدcountry نعيشdo we live ؟ وأيماand what
في أيما بلد نعيش ؟ وأيما
عهدage يمرpasses علىover الكنانةal-Kinana (the Quiver; Egypt) مظلمdark ؟
عهد يمر على الكنانة مظلم ؟
In what country do we live? And what
In which country do we live? And which
dark age is passing over al-Kinana?
Era is passing over dignity in darkness?
عهدan age نسامwe are made to suffer الخسفabasement فيهin it ونبتلىand we are afflicted
عهد نسام الخسف فيه ونبتلى
نقماreprisals إذاwhen قمناwe rise نضجwe cry out وننقمand we protest
نقما إذا قمنا نضج وننقم
An age in which we are subjected to abasement and afflicted
An era in which we are tried with disgrace
with reprisals whenever we rise, cry out, and protest.
When we stand up ripe and vengeful.
وحشيةsavagery كشفlifted الزمانtime حجابهاits veil
وحشية كشف الزمان حجابها
لاno بلrather أشدmore ferocious منthan الوحوشbeasts وأظلمand more unjust
لا بل أشد من الوحوش وأظلم
Savagery whose veil time has lifted—
Savagery which time has uncovered its veil
No—rather, fiercer than beasts, and more unjust.
No, but darker and more savage than beasts.
الوحشthe beast يفتكkills جائعاًhungry ويعفand it refrains عنfrom
الوحش يفتك جائعاً ويعف عن
فتكاتهits killing إذwhen ماemphatic particle يعبdrinks deeply ويطعمand it eats !
فتكاته إذ ما يعب ويطعم !
The beast kills when hungry, and refrains from
The beast pounces hungry and abstains
its killing when it drinks deeply and eats!
From its killings when it is satiated and fed!
ياO أيهاyou (vocative) الرفقاءthose who are kind بالحيوانto animals لاdo not
يا أيها الرفقاء بالحيوان لا
تنسواforget أناسيّاhuman beings تئنmoan وتألمand suffer pain
تنسوا أناسيّا تئن وتألم
O you who are kind to animals, do not
O you comrades of animals, do not
forget human beings who moan and suffer.
Forget the human who moans and hurts.
فيin مصرEgypt قدmay تلقىreceive الكلابdogs رعايةcare
في مصر قد تلقى الكلاب رعاية
بيناwhile يُحقّرare belittled شعبهاits people ويُحطّمand are crushed !
بينا يُحقّر شعبها ويُحطّم !
In Egypt, dogs may receive care,
In Egypt, even dogs are cared for
while its people are belittled and crushed!
While its people are despised and crushed!
فيin مصرEgypt لايلقىdoes not receive المسيءthe wrongdoer جزاءهhis due punishment
في مصر لايلقى المسيء جزاءه
لاno بلrather يكافأhe is rewarded دونهinstead of it ويكرّمand he is honored
لا بل يكافأ دونه ويكرّم
In Egypt, the wrongdoer does not receive his punishment;
In Egypt, the evildoer is not punished
No—rather, he is rewarded instead, and honored.
No, but rewarded over his peers and honored.
فيin مصرEgypt ماwhat لاnot يحفظrecords التاريخhistory منof
في مصر ما لا يحفظ التاريخ من
فحشoutrage يعجclamors بهاwithin it وفحشand outrage يكتمis concealed
فحش يعج بها وفحش يكتم
In Egypt are things that history does not record:
In Egypt is what history does not preserve
outrage clamoring within it, and outrage kept concealed.
Of disgrace overflowing and disgrace concealed.
فيin مصرEgypt ! لوif فيin مصرEgypt بعضsome كرامةdignity
في مصر ! لو في مصر بعض كرامة
غضبتit would rage وفارand would boil علىalong جوانبهاits flanks الدمblood !
غضبت وفار على جوانبها الدم !
In Egypt! If Egypt had any dignity,
In Egypt! If Egypt had some dignity
it would rage, and blood would boil along its flanks!
It would be angry and blood would flow on its sides!
ماذاwhat يعزis too precious علىfor الهوانhumiliation نصونهwe safeguard it ؟
ماذا يعز على الهوان نصونه ؟
لمnot (past negation) يبقremain منof حرماتناour sanctities ماanything that نكرمwe honor
لم يبق من حرماتنا ما نكرم
What is too precious for humiliation, that we might safeguard it?
What humiliation can we protect?
Nothing remains of our sanctities for us to honor.
Nothing of our sanctities is left to honor.
الموتdeath ؟ ياO للموتfor death ! أشرفnobler شرعةway of life
الموت ؟ يا للموت ! أشرف شرعة
مماthan what نسامwe are subjected بهto it ومماand than what نوسمwe are branded
مما نسام به ومما نوسم
Death? O for death! A nobler way of life
Death? Oh death! A more honorable law
than what we are subjected to, and what we are branded with.
Than what we are labeled with and tattooed!
