ويجوس في نفس كقبر الغيهب !

I felt the barren wasteland closing around me,

And I felt the barren wilderness enfolding me,

prowling within my soul like a lightless grave!

And prowling through a soul like a tomb of darkness!

ولو انما اختصرت حياتي لم أبل

بل لم احس بنقصها أو أعتب

بل لم احس بنقصها أو أعتب

Had my life merely been cut short, I would not have cared;

And even if my life had merely been shortened, I would not have cared,

I would not even have felt its loss, nor complained.

Indeed, I would not have felt its loss or complained.

وإذا تشابهت الحياة وأقفرت

مجت برمتها ، ولم تتطلب

When life grows all alike and barren,

And when life grows monotonous and barren,

it drags on in its entirety, no longer desired.

It is spurned in its entirety, and not sought.

واليوم آسف للدقائق تنطوي

من عمري الغالي الثمين الطيب

Today I grieve as the minutes fold away

And today I grieve for the minutes folding away

from my cherished life—precious and sweet.

From my dear, precious, sweet life.

Today I watch them, and I watch their tread;

I wish they would slow and linger,

And I wish they would slow down and linger,

in their tread, like a newborn bundled tight.

In their steps, like a slow walker lingering nearby.

تغلو الدقائق في حياة خصبة

وتهون أعوام بعمر مجدب !

وتهون أعوام بعمر مجدب !

Minutes grow precious in a fertile life,

Minutes grow precious in a fruitful life,

while years count little in a barren lifetime!

And years are worth little in a barren lifetime!

الحب فاض على الحياة بخصبه

وأجد عمرانا بكل مخرب

وأجد عمرانا بكل مخرب

Love has overflowed life with its fertility,

Love has flooded life with its fertility,

and I find flourishing habitation in every ruin.

And brought new habitation to every ruined place,

وأزاح أستار الدجى فتكشفت

ظلماته عن كل زاه معجب

ظلماته عن كل زاه معجب

It swept aside the curtains of darkness, until

And swept aside the veils of night, so away fell

their gloom was stripped from every radiant wonder.

Its darkness from all that is radiant and delightful.

وكذلك تحلو الحياة وتجتلي

وكذلك تحلو الحياة وتجتلي

وتعز ساعات الغرام المخصب

وتعز ساعات الغرام المخصب

And thus life grows sweet and reveals itself,

And thus life grows sweet and stands revealed,

and the hours of fruitful passion grow dear.

And the hours of fruitful love grow precious.
