    If I do not love you for radiance and light,

    And for the beauty of a face radiant with life,

    مني فأتبعه اتباع سحير

    And for your spirit's spell, when it steals reason

    From me, so I follow it like one bewitched;

    بك منه ساحرة من التعبير

    And for the beauty you embodied, which found voice

    Through you in a bewitching expression of itself;

    للكون ، أو أحييت من مقبور

    And for what you were given, and the love you bestowed

    Upon the universe, or the buried things you revived;

    If I do not love you with an enthralled one's love, nor

    A captive's love, then with the love of one grateful:

    مما لديك من الحيا المذخور

    The love of one whose life you revived within him

    From the life-giving rain you have in store;

    قد عاشها كالعامل المأجور

    And granted him mastery over life, though for so long

    He had lived it like a hired worker;

    وأعذت قابله من المحظور

    And gave him back his past after its loss,

    And sheltered his future from what is forbidden;

    فجلوت كل محجب مستور

    The love of one in whose heart you shone,

    And so unveiled all that was veiled and concealed;

    وسكت لكل ممنع وخطير

    And breathed into his resolves, so they blazed,

    And fell silent before all that was unassailable and perilous;

    Or let me love you with the love of one you inspired

    With a law whose radiance lights every feeling—

    Poetry whose blossoms you gathered from life,

    And from beauty you scented it with fragrance,

    ومن الندى حلما كوجه غرير

    And from light you gave it its hopes,

    And from dew, a dream like an innocent youth's face;

    And sent it forth as life's inspiration and art,

    Which life reveals within her storied beauty.

    Shall I not, then, love you? It is surely a duty:

    The grateful one's love for a giver who is thanked.
