رضيتI was content إليكto you العلياthe highest rank وقدthough indeed كنتI was أهلهاworthy of it
رضيت إليك العليا وقد كنت أهلها
وقلتand I said لهمto them بينيbetween me وبينand between أخيmy brother فرقa difference
وقلت لهم بيني وبين أخي فرق
I yielded to you the heights of glory, though I had been worthy of them,
I was content for the highest rank to be yours, though I was worthy of it.
and told them, “There is a distinction between me and my brother.”
And I told them: there is a difference between me and my brother.
ولمand not يكwas بيin me عنهاfrom it نكولshrinking back وإنماbut rather
ولم يك بي عنها نكول وإنما
تجافيتI stepped aside عنfrom حقيmy right فتمso became complete لكfor you الحقthe right
تجافيت عن حقي فتم لك الحق
It was no shrinking on my part from them; rather,
I did not shrink from it; rather,
I stood aside from my rightful due, and so the prize was wholly yours.
I yielded my right, so the right became wholly yours.
ولابدand there is no avoiding ليfor me منfrom أنthat أكونI be مصلياًrunning second
ولابد لي من أن أكون مصلياً
إذاif كنتI was أرضىcontent أنthat يكونit be لكyours السبقthe lead
إذا كنت أرضى أن يكون لك السبق
Yet I must be the runner close behind
And I must run second,
if I am content for you to have the lead.
If I am content for you to come first.
