فَمَنso who مُبلِغُwill inform الحجّاجِal-Hajjaj أَنَّthat سَميرَةًSamira
قَلىloathed كُلَّevery دينٍfaith غَيرexcept دينِthe faith of الخَوارِجِthe Kharijites
Who, then, will tell al-Hajjaj that Samira
Has loathed every faith except the faith of the Kharijites?
رَأىregarded الناسَall people إِلّاexcept مَنthose who رَأىheld a view مِثلَlike رَأيِهِhis view
مَلاعينَaccursed تَرّاكينَhabitual abandoners قَصدَthe straight course of المَناهِجِthe paths
He regarded all people, except those who shared his view,
As accursed, ever forsaking the straight paths.
فَأَيُّso whichever اِمرِئٍman أَيُّwhichever اِمرِئٍman ياO اِبنَson of يوسُفٍYusuf
ظَفَرتَyou prevailed بِهِover him لَمhas not يَأتِresorted to غَيرَanything but الوَلائِجِcovert ways
So whichever man—whichever man, O son of Yusuf—
You have subdued has resorted only to covert ways.
إِذَنthen لَرَأَيتَyou would surely see الحَقَّthe truth مِنهُfrom him مُخالِفاًat odds
لِدينِكَwith your faith أَنif كُنتَyou were اِمرَءاًa man غَيرَnot فالِجِvictorious
Then you would surely see the truth from him at odds
With your faith, if you were a man who had not prevailed.
يُسائِلُنيquestions me الحجّاجُal-Hajjaj عَنabout أَمرِthe matter of دينِهِhis faith
وَلَيسَand is not هَواهُhis desire لِلصَوابِto what is right بِواشِجِbound
Al-Hajjaj questions me on the matter of his faith,
And his desire has no bond with what is right.
فَأَضلِلso how astray بِهِhe is مِنas an واشِجٍadherent خَلَجَتdrew away بِهِhim
عَنِaway from الدينِreligion وَالإِسلامِand Islam إِحدىone of الخَوالِجِthe distractions
So how astray he is as an adherent, drawn away
From religion and Islam by one of the distractions!
وَهَيهاتَand far away فَلجٌFalj وَالمُقيمُand the dweller بِنَهرِهاby its river
إِذاwhen قِستَهاyou measure it فيin البُعدِdistance مِنfrom رَملِthe sands of عالِجِAlij
Far away are Falj and the one dwelling by its river,
When you measure its distance from the sands of Alij.
فَياso oh لَيتَنيif only I إِذاwhen أَمكَنَتنِيَcame within my reach فُرصَةٌan opportunity
فَتَكتُI slew unawares بِهِhim فَتكَa sudden slaying اِمرئٍa man غَيرِnot نافِجِboastful
Oh, if only, when an opportunity came within my reach,
I had slain him with an unboastful man's sudden stroke!
فَقَدfor indeed كِدتُI almost لَولاbut for اللَهِGod أَنto أَمزِجَmingle الهُدىthe guidance
هُدىguidance الحَقِّthe truth مِنfrom قَلبيmy heart بِمَذقَةِwith a diluted draught مازِجِa mixer
For, but for God, I almost mingled the guidance—
The guidance of truth from my heart—with a mixer's diluted draught.
فَعَمَّمتُهُso I turbaned him مِثلَlike العَقيقَةِa lightning flash صارِماًa keen sword
تَخالُyou would imagine عَلىon مَتنيهِits two sides ماءَthe water of الصَهارِجِcisterns
So I made a keen sword, like a lightning flash, his turban,
You would imagine cistern-water on its two sides.
فَأَقبَلتُso I set out نَحوَtoward اللَهِGod بِاللَهِin God واثِقاًtrusting
وَماand not كُربَتيmy anguish غَيرُother than الإِلهِGod بِفارِجِa dispeller
So I set out toward God, trusting in God,
And none but God can dispel my anguish,
عَلىon ظَهرِthe back of مَحبوكِfirmly knit القَراthe spine مُتَمَطِّراًgalloping
إِلىtoward فِتيَةٍyoung men بيضِwhite الوُجوهِfaces مباهِجِradiant
On the back of a firm-backed mount, galloping
Toward fair-faced, radiant young men,
إِلىtoward قَطَرِيٍّQatari فيamong الشَراةِthe Shurat (self-sellers) مُعالِجاًstriving
وَلَستُand I am not إِلىtoward غَيرِother than الشَراةِthe Shurat (self-sellers) بِعائِجِturning
Toward Qatari among the Shurat, striving,
And I turn toward none but the Shurat.
إِلىtoward عُصبَةٍa band أَماas for النَهارَthe daytime فَإِنَّهُمthen indeed they
هُمُthey themselves الأُسدُthe lions عِندَat الحَربِwar أُسدُlions التَهايِجِraging combat
Toward a band who, by day, are
The very lions of war, lions in the raging fray;
وَأَمّاand as for إِذاwhen ماemphatic particle اللَيلُthe night جَنَّshrouds فَإِنَّهُمthen indeed they
قِيامٌstanding in prayer كَأَنواحِlike the laments of النِساءِwomen النَواشِجِsobbing
And when night casts its shroud, they
Stand in prayer, wailing like sobbing women.
يُنادونَthey proclaim بِالتَحكيمِfor judgment لِلَّهِto God إِنَّهُمindeed they
رَأواthey saw حُكمَthe judgment of عَمروٍAmr كَالرِياحِlike the winds الهَوائِجِraging
They proclaim that judgment belongs to God; indeed, they
Have seen Amr's judgment as raging winds.
وَحَكَمَand judged اِبنson of قيسٍQays مِثلَlike ذاكَthat فَأُعصِمواso hold fast
بِحَبلٍto a rope شَديدِstrong المَتنِthe fiber لَيسَnot بِناهِجِworn thin
And Ibn Qays judged likewise; so hold fast
To a rope of strong fiber, not worn thin.
وَلاand no خَيرَgood فيin الدُنياthis world إِذاif الدينُfaith لَمnot يَكُنbe
صَحيحاًsound وَلَمand does not يَصمُدaim لِقَصدِfor the straight course of المَخارِجِthe ways out
And there is no good in this world if faith is not
Sound, and does not seek the straight paths of escape.
