أزائرةَO visitor الأحلامof dreams ليسis not مناليmy goal
قريبٌnear، ولاnor الأيامthe days تسترconceal حاليmy condition
O visitor of dreams, my goal is not
The islands of dreams are not within my reach,
near, nor do the days conceal my condition.
Nor do the days conceal my state,
تُقاذفنيhurls me للوهمtoward illusion روحيmy soul وإننيthough indeed I
عزيزٌproud علىabove ظلمinjustice الهوىof love متعاليlofty
My soul hurls me toward illusion, though I am
My soul casts me into illusion, yet I
proud, rising above love's injustice.
Am steadfast against the injustice of passion’s tyranny,
رجوتُI hoped ولوand if أنthat الرجاءhope يفيدُنيhelps me
لماwould not have بتُّI spent the night ظمآناًthirsty ونهرُكِwhile your river حاليsweet
I hoped; and had hope been of use to me,
I wished, even if wishing would not avail me,
I would not have spent the night thirsty while your river is sweet.
That I wouldn’t remain thirsty while your river is my state,
أغاليتيO my beloved هلis there منany لقاءٍmeeting يضمناbrings us together؟
علىby غرةٍsurprise، غالٍa dear one يحدّثspeaks to غاليmy beloved
O my beloved, is there a meeting that brings us together?
My love, is there a meeting that brings us together?
Unexpectedly—a dear one speaking to my beloved.
At an unripe date, a precious one speaks to a precious one,
أحنّI yearn وأشواقand longings اللقاfor reunion تستريبنيfill me with doubt
تعاليcome ولوand even if زيفاًin pretense إليَّto me تعاليcome!
I yearn, and longings for reunion fill me with doubt.
Yearning and longing for the meeting confuse me,
Come to me, even in pretense—come!
Come to me, even falsely, come closer!
تعاليcome إلىto ظلٍshade ورفّand the flutter حمامةٍof a dove
ونغمةand the song عصفورٍof a sparrow وراحةand peace بالِof mind
Come to shade and a dove's flutter,
Come closer to a shade and the flap of a dove,
and a sparrow's song and peace of mind,
And the melody of a bird and the serenity of mind,
وجنةِand a garden فردوسٍof paradise وبيتٍand a home يضمناembraces us
وأجملand the loveliest أيامٍdays وخيرand the finest لياليnights
and a garden of paradise and a home that embraces us,
And the garden of Paradise and a house that shelters us,
and the loveliest days and the finest nights.
And the most beautiful days and the best nights,
تعاليcome إلىto روحٍa soul كأنas though صريرهاits creaking
أقاصيصُtales ركبانٍof riders بطودٍon a lofty mountain خاليdeserted
Come to a soul whose creaking sounds like
Come closer to a soul whose ringing
riders' tales on a lofty, deserted mountain.
Is the stories of riders in empty valleys,
أعللI console نفسيmyself باللقاءwith reunion وإننيthough indeed I
لأعلمI certainly know ألاthat no قُربَcloseness منكِfrom you يُرىis seen ليfor me
I console myself with hopes of reunion, though I
I justify myself with the meeting, and yet I
know full well that no closeness to you is in sight for me.
Know that no nearness to you can be seen by me,
وأصبرand I endure حتىuntil يَعجبونthey marvel وإنهمand indeed they
يظنونthey think قلبيmy heart منof غرامكِlove for you ساليno longer yearning
And I endure until they marvel, and indeed they
And I am patient until they are amazed, and yet they
think my heart has forgotten its love for you.
Think my heart has flowed from passion for you,
وبيand within me منof عظيمimmense الوجدlonging ياحلوةO sweet one اللمىthe lips' dusky hue
كأنas though همومthe sorrows العالمينof all the worlds عياليmy children
Yet within me is immense longing, O sweet, dusky-lipped one,
And in me, from the great ecstasy, O sweet of beauty,
as though the sorrows of all the worlds were my children.
It is as if the sorrows of both worlds are my children.
