I will meet you when eyes sleep,

    and when stillness envelops Riyadh,

and when the clamor of the lamps fades,

    so they neither look nor notice;

and when the stars peer down upon us,

while we walk without a destination.

    We race our pampered dreams—

who, then, can see us, when we are the eyelids!

And we water the clouds, so they rain down longing,

and by night we play the sweetest melodies.

And we shout at them: Leave us alone, for we

shall remain as we are—or we shall not be.

If it is a dream, do not wake us

    to your misery, O sleepers.

And O rose of the night, ever since you came to be,

the monks of our temple have been bewildered.

Were you, I wonder, created from light, or from

the rustle of winds and the color of rain clouds?

Is this your face—or the sun, while the peo-

-ple swim in an orbit around it!

Are these your eyes—or the stars that scat-

-tered one night and became eyes?

Is it your mouth, or a fire of longing blazing,

while we disbelieve in what was sent down?

Are these your breasts—or two forests of ro-

-ses, whose stigmas the linden has covered?

She is the secret; nothing can rival it,

and we prostrate ourselves at her prayer niche.

They bury their eyes each night,

and morning comes, yet they do not know.

They think deserts lie between me and you,

and every night their assumptions prove false.

And every night we shall drift off, drunk

with love—oh, if only they knew!
