    I love you; do you know what you are in my heart?

    And what torment my love has driven me toward?

    And can you know that in my thoughts

    Is a passion for you that has passed beyond love?

    I love you; I do not know—is it a dream I am living?

    Ever since my eyes sipped from your sweet river.

    I know only that, if they mention you at a gathering,

    My ribs shatter, and my eyelashes tremble.

    O my enchantress, the memory of you burns my heart's core,

    As fire blazes through dry grass.

    O my enchantress, if you tasted love as I have,

    It would delight you to dwell here beside me.

    She is passion; I hope for union with her every night.

    She is sheer impossibility, in distance and nearness.

    I conceal a love that does not fade with separation,

    And I harbor a longing that has taken hold of my mind.

    وأن تصف اللا عيب، ذاكَ من العيبِ

    And I complain to the one who fashioned beauty in a young girl;

    And to describe the flawless—that is a flaw.

    Then hair, as though beauty slept within its night,

    And a face, as though night were a kind of lie.

    فأبيضه يسبي.. وأسوده يسبي!

    The whiteness of clouds, which darkness has veiled;

    So its whiteness captivates, and its blackness captivates!

    إذا نظرتني آذنت طبلة الحربِ

    And an eye, as though death came from its glances;

    When it gazes at me, the drum of war sounds.

    And a languid eye, soft and languorous of gaze,

    As though the eye's glances were drunk without drinking.

    فليت حياتي بين جفنيكِ والهُدبِ

    In it is morning's languor, with the sharpness of spears;

    So, if only my life lay between your eyelids and lashes!

    And a cheek's blush, tinged with bashfulness,

    And a mouth of ruby, not of earth.

    I love you—what is my fault if my heart betrays me?

    And if I have betrayed myself for you, by God, what is my fault?

    To you I lamented my soul, dying of thirst,

    As the thirsty one complains of drought's severity.

    Except that people's complaints to people are humiliation,

    And my heart's complaint of you is slaughter with crucifixion.

    How long must I taste death every night!

    While your saliva heals the malady of soul and heart.

    And were they to make me choose between your saliva and the worlds,

    I would choose nothing but death in your moist mouth.

    Whenever I say, 'I will forget,' your mournful apparition passes me,

    And makes a distraught, ardent lover's tears flow.

    And a heart nearly flees from between my ribs,

    To swim in the skies of your love like clouds.

    متى يحكم الأحباب بالوصل يا ربي؟

    My tormentor, my breast has overflowed with love's anguish;

    When will the beloved decree union, O my Lord?
