    ومُرِي الجبال الشامخاتِ تميلُ

    And command the sky, so it bows for our meeting;

    And command the lofty mountains to lean.

    For even their abundance is scant when we meet.

    And roses and fields have grown beneath it.

    Do not go, O night of lovers, for I

    will spend the night in her embrace, O night.

    For the heart has no intimate friend but you.

    I am in love—and is there solace for one like me?

    Or can my heart change its love?

    Love is life's Talmud and its religion,

    And light, the Torah, and the Gospel.

    O Love, were a messenger among lovers!

    by envy... when the envious have no way to reach us!

    Ever since the two hands met and trembled,

    No handkerchief of ours has grown wet with pain.

    لا موعداً نهفو له سيزولُ

    No shore where we anchor will tire of us;

    No tryst we yearn for will vanish;

    لا خنجراً في وجهنا مسلولُ

    No letters that swagger before us will slay us;

    No dagger is drawn against our faces.

    إنّي على أعطافها محمولُ

    This life draws us in, so hold fast;

    I am borne upon its flanks.

    لقد ابتدا يا حلوتي أيلولُ

    This life is ours... so do not linger;

    Indeed, September has begun, my sweet one.

    This life is ours... we shall live it together,

    until the lamp sleeps with the darkness of night.

    no matter what whirlwinds and torrents rise over you.

    O my goddess... tighten the bond of my love,

    That I may die... I am slain in my love for you.
