أسعادُ ما لي في وصالك مطمع

أسعادُ ما لي في وصالك مطمع

أبدا ولا سمعي لعذلك يسمع

أبدا ولا سمعي لعذلك يسمع

O Su‘ad, I have no hope of union with you,

My hope of your union is ever beyond reach,

ever, nor does my ear listen to your reproach.

Nor does my ear heed your blame.

ما راعني ريم الغميم وقد غدا

ما راعني ريم الغميم وقد غدا

حول الغميم له مراح ومرتع

حول الغميم له مراح ومرتع

The gazelle of al-Ghamim did not captivate me, though it has come to have

The tears of the clouds distress me not, though they pour down,

around al-Ghamim a resting place and pasture.

For around the clouds it finds pasture and rest.

كلا ولا حسنا إذا ما أسفرت

كلا ولا حسنا إذا ما أسفرت

وجها له وجه الدجى يتقشع

وجها له وجه الدجى يتقشع

No indeed, nor a beauty, when she unveils

Nay, no beauty has the moon when it rises

a face before which the face of darkness clears away.

If it shows a face without the veil of night drawn close.

ولقد سبرت بفطنتي شرع الهوى

ولقد سبرت بفطنتي شرع الهوى

زمنا بأحكام الهوى أتشرّع

زمنا بأحكام الهوى أتشرّع

And indeed, with my discernment I probed love’s law

Long have I probed with my wisdom the law of love,

for a time, observing the decrees of love.

Studying the rules of love assiduously.

فسألت قلبي من تكون متيما

فسألت قلبي من تكون متيما

في حبه قال البطين الأنزع

في حبه قال البطين الأنزع

So I asked my heart, “Who are you so deeply enamored

So I asked my heart, "Who holds you enthralled?"

of?” It said, “The full-bellied, receding-haired one.”

It answered, "The heartbreaker par excellence."

أعني الذي بولائه أعمالنا

أعني الذي بولائه أعمالنا

قبلت ودون ولائه لا تنفع

قبلت ودون ولائه لا تنفع

I mean the one through allegiance to whom our deeds

I mean the one to whom our deeds,

were accepted; without allegiance to him, they are of no avail.

Before loyalty to him, are of no avail.

يا من يحلّ المشكلات ويكشف الـ

ـبلوى عن العاني الضعيف ويشفع

ـبلوى عن العاني الضعيف ويشفع

O you who resolve difficulties and lift the

O You who unravels dilemmas and lifts

affliction from the weak captive, and intercede.
