Is this your face, or is this the full moon rising?

And is this your mouth, or a blazing flash of lightning?

And are these pearls, or daisies set in rows

Within your mouth? And is this night, or your overflowing hair?

And is that a crescent, or a brow revealed to us?

Then darkness brightened, though night was falling.

And are those arrows, or eyes that shoot?

When they look at us, a cry rings out within the heart.

    بِهِ الصَّبُّ مُضنىً ما تَغَنَّت صَوادِحُ

    And this is a honeyed smile, crimson in hue;

For it the ardent lover wastes away as long as songbirds sing.

And are these lances, or is this a slender figure?

So there it is, swaying, intoxicated with love.

And are those little caskets, or breasts upon her chest?

The lover is enthralled by them; for them his tears flow.

And a slender waist complains of the weight of her haunches.

I shall remember her as long as a mourning bird laments in the groves.

For one like her, a devout man forsakes his devotions,

And asks his generous Lord to pardon him.

A maiden whose good nature is innate,

And whose character is a garden flowering with beauty.

So, you who reproach me for her, be gentle with one sick with love,

Whose tearful eyes are like clouds, while his heart wanders.

Do you reproach me for loving a white gazelle I have known

As a true friend, faithful and generous to loved ones?

    فَيا لائِمي أَقصِر فَما أَنتَ ناصِحُ

    An oryx doe before whom all beauties bow;

So, you who blame me, desist—you are no true adviser.

    وَقَلبيَ يَرعاها وَلَو أَنا نازِحُ

    She is the full moon in beauty, and lances are like her figure;

And my heart watches over her, though I am far away.

So, full moon, be gentle with the heart that now

Painful longing visits morning and evening.

Be gentle with a lover who has never ceased to adore you,

And grant him union; union has its benefits.

And beware of heeding the scolder, for he is

An enemy: do not listen, and say, 'You are a detractor.'

Does he reproach us for love, when love is the path

Of a sheikh descended from the noblest, mightiest chiefs?

Hated by death, a vexation to foes, a beacon of guidance,

Lavish in giving: whoever meets him gains.

An ally of fidelity, a friend of purity, a lord who now

Has lofty honor, while his hater stands stiff-necked.

Open of countenance, wide in reach, an eloquent speaker,

Praiseworthy in his endeavors, an elucidator of obscure matters.

    إِذا جالَ في عِلمٍ فَمن ذا يُناضِحُ

    Eloquent, he takes precedence in every gathering;

When he ranges through a field of knowledge, who can rival him?

His aspirations have baffled the foremost men of his age,

And whoever praises him does not recount a tenth.

So, if you desire prose or verse, he is

Distinguished, foremost, and sound in judgment.

And if you seek a gift from the ocean of his bounty,

He greets you with glad tidings and rises to shake your hand.

And if you seek to gain knowledge from him, indeed,

He is an ocean of learning, not shallow pools.

    وَقُربُكَ يُحيينِي وَبُعدُكَ فادِحُ

    So, Abd Aziz, you are my solace and my comfort;

And your nearness gives me life, while your distance is grievous.

    فَسامِح حَبيبي فاللَّبيبُ يُسامِحُ

    So take this verse, woven by the mind of one who falls short;

So forgive me, my beloved, for the wise forgive.

My peace be upon you as long as a lover sighs

For his beloved, or a mourning bird laments in the groves,

And as long as the yearning one remembers those he loves,

And as long as his streaming eyes overflow,

And as long as he goes singing through a pitch-black night,

In a plaintive voice whenever a passing bird cries.
