    فإِجلالُ هذا دُونَ ذاكَ ذنوبُ!

    People's stations each have their allotted worth;

    so honoring this one but not that one is sinful!

    Long experience teaches me a lesson,

    and whoever does not heed time is a trifler.

    You offer everyone sincere affection, as though

    you thought a base man would become good through gifts!

    So you raise his standing to lift his aspirations,

    though baseness and faults have weighed him down!

    أراكَ كُرُوبَ الدَّهرِ كيفَ تُشِيبُ!

    He feigned humility until he gained what he wanted;

    he showed you how time's sorrows turn hair gray!

    And he met with ingratitude the rank you had raised him

    to—and that ingratitude is no surprise!

    For a soul's deficiency cannot be made good

    by kindness, nor can a lavish giver enrich a base man.

    But one of noble nature does not deny

    a generous man's bounty; indeed, he is discerning.

    So if you raise the deficient man's standing, honoring him

    with what he is unworthy of, while time keeps watch,

    شَفَيْتَ بِهِ داءً، فأَنْتَ طبيبُ

    he will lower your standing if you grant him his desire;

    you have cured an ailment thereby, so you are a physician.

    So esteem the generous-hearted; he will repay you fully whenever

    time turns, or a loved one shuns you.

    He is noble in disposition; chivalry has bequeathed him

    a gallant spirit, while calamities recur.

    “And whoever does good to those unworthy of it”—

    calamities will cast him into the depths of misery.
