أمسِyesterday جرحٌa wound واليومَand today فيin القلبthe heart جرحٌa wound
أمسِyesterday نمناwe slept عليهupon it واليومand today نصحوwe awaken
Yesterday, a wound; today, a wound in the heart.
Yesterday there was a wound, and today in my heart there is a wound
Yesterday we slept upon it; today we awaken.
Yesterday we slept on it, and today we woke up

Whenever death shook Rashid,
Whenever the winds shook Rashid
A sore oozed in his swift-striding leg.
His disabled leg oozed with sores

Whenever he strengthened the tribe's arm,
Whenever he tightened the belt for the tribe
The tribe came toward him, reproaching him.
The tribe turned to him pleadingly

O beautiful horseman, farewell.
Oh beautiful knight, farewell
Our conquest is mercy, love, and forgiveness.
We feel mercy, love and forgiveness for you

O beautiful horseman, answer me:
Oh beautiful knight, answer me
How can a mountain's foot rise above the lofty peaks?
How can the lowlands rise above the peaks?

فيin يدthe hand المدَّعيthe pretender وماand not اهتزَّstirred رُمحُa spear
You held them in high esteem, yet no sword stirred
You were their greatest, yet no sword shook
In the pretender's hand, nor did a spear stir.
In the hand of the pretender, nor did a spear shake

You raised their edifice, not knowing
You made their palace the highest, but you don't know
That no edifice had risen for your people.
That it did not elevate your people's palace

Perhaps you were distressed by the darkness, but
Maybe you felt constrained by the darkness, but
Pause a while; dawn will follow the night.
Stand still for a while, the night will be followed by dawn

فقليلٌthen it is rare أنthat يصنعcreates المجدَglory جُرحa wound
And if you rose only while wounded,
And if you rose up only wounded
Then it is rare for a wound to forge glory.
It is little that glory is made with wounds
