Oh my inspirer, in my blood there is rainy weather for moments
ياO مُلهميmy muse للثوانيfor the seconds فيin دميmy blood مطرٌrain
وللقاءاتand for meetings وجْهٌa face لونهits color سَفَرُtravel
O my muse, the seconds have rain within my blood;
And for meetings a face whose color is yellow
and meetings have a face whose color is travel;
And for corridors, enveloping silence and a folded hand
وللممراتِand for the corridors صمتٌsilence مطبقٌall-enveloping ويدٌand a hand
مكتوفةٌbound وفوادٌand a heart نبضهits pulse ضجرrestlessness
and the corridors have utter silence, and a hand
And a throbbing heart full of boredom
bound, and a heart whose pulse is restlessness;
And for the windows and walls, restlessness
وللنوافذand for the windows والجدرانِand the walls حشرجةٌa death-rattle
فكيفso how يخرجُdeparts عنfrom ناموسهits natural law الحجرthe stone؟
and the windows and walls have a death-rattle.
So how can stone come out of its statute?
So how can stone depart from its natural law?
Where do I start? My sorrow has no end
منfrom أينwhere أبدأI begin ؟ حزنيmy sorrow مالهit has no طرفٌend
وأعظمand the greatest الحزنِgrief حزنٌgrief ليسis not يختصرabridged
Where shall I begin? My sorrow has no end;
And the greatest sorrow is a sorrow that can't be summarized
and the greatest grief is grief that cannot be abridged.
Where? My language is of no use, nor my pen
منfrom أينwhere ؟ لاneither لُغتيmy language تُجديavails ولاnor قلميmy pen
تداخلَbecame entangled المُبتداthe subject المحذوفُelided والخبرُand the predicate
Where to begin? Neither my language nor my pen avails;
The subject and predicate got mixed up in confusion
the elided subject and the predicate have become entangled.
I'm here at "Zahran" a dreary song

كئيبةmournful يتحاشىshuns طعمهاits taste الوترُthe string
I am here, in the hills of Zahran, a song
That the chord avoids its taste
mournful, whose taste the string shuns.
I'm here, oh fellow traveler, a strangled rhyme
أناI هناhere ياO رفيقcompanion of الدربthe road قافيةٌa rhyme
مخنوقةٌstifled مُقْلةٌan eye يمتصهاdrains it السهرsleeplessness
I am here, O companion of the road, a rhyme
Choked, little, absorbed by the night
stifled, an eye drained by sleeplessness.
Neither does poetry bloom in my palm to scatter it
لاnot الشعرpoetry يورقputs forth leaves فيin كفِّيmy palm فأنثرهso I may scatter it
زهراًas flowers ولاnor يائسٌdespairing منهof it فأعتذرso I excuse myself
Poetry does not leaf out in my palm for me to scatter it
As flowers, nor am I hopeless of it to apologize
as flowers; nor do I despair of it so as to excuse myself.
I still travel in my night, my worries journey with me
ماnot زلتُI have ceased أرحلُI journey فيin ليليmy night يسافرُtravels بيwith me
همّيmy worry ، وهلand does يرتُقُstitch up الدَّوامةَthe whirlpool السفرُtravel
I still journey through my night, carried along by
And does sorrow ever transcend traveling?
my worry—and can travel stitch up the whirlpool?
I'm here, "the kiss of lovers", my blood filled with it
أناI هناhere " قِبلةprayer-direction العُشاقthe lovers " ملءُfilling دميmy blood
وأنتand you وحدكyou alone فيهاwithin it جئتَyou came تعتمرto perform umrah
I am here; the 'lovers' qibla' fills my blood;
And you alone in it came to perform Umrah
and you alone came there to perform umrah.
My city, O Abu "Paradise", is extinguished
مدينتيmy city ياO أباfather of " فردوسَFirdaws " مطفأةٌextinguished
ماno للقناديلof the lanterns فيin أحيائهاits neighborhoods أثرُtrace
My city, O Abu Firdaws, is extinguished;
The lanterns in its neighborhoods left no trace
there is no trace of lanterns in its neighborhoods.
I remembered the language of piety and it deserves
تذكرتُI recalled لغةَthe language of التقوىpiety وحُقand it was fitting لهاfor it
إنَّindeed الكريمthe noble one إذاwhen ما(emphatic particle) غابَis absent يُنتَظرُis awaited
I recalled the language of piety—and rightly so:
When the generous travels, he is awaited
Indeed, the noble one, when absent, is awaited.
I wander reading in its walls burning

مشبوبةًkindled وقلوباًand hearts فيكَfor you تستعرblaze
I walk, reading in its walls pangs of anguish,
Yearning, and hearts burning for you
kindled, and hearts that blaze for you.
I see the stones bleeding sorrow
أرىI see الحجارةthe stones جمراًembers نازفاًbleeding شجناًsorrow
ولاand no قذىًa mote ذابdissolved فيin عينيmy eye ولاnor عوَرُimpaired sight
I see the stones as embers bleeding sorrow;
No speck melted in my eyes nor became blind
and no mote has dissolved in my eye, nor is my sight impaired.
But it's the fruit of love you planted

يُمناكyour right hand طابتwas blessed وطابand was blessed النبتُthe plants والمدرand the clods of earth
But it is the fruit of the love sown by
Your right hand prospered, and the planting and rain prospered
your right hand—blessed was it, and blessed the plants and the clods.
And most who give their love today
وأكثرand most of الباذلينthose who give اليومَtoday حبَّهمُtheir love
لمdid not يحصدواthey reap يعلمknows الرحمنُthe Most Merciful ماwhat بذرواthey sowed
And most of those who give their love today
Did not reap, the Merciful knows what they planted
have not reaped—the Most Merciful knows—what they sowed.
And you, love springs from you embracing
وأنتَand you يثمرbears fruit منكfrom you الحُبُّlove معتنقاًin an embrace
وأكثرand most of الحُبِّlove شوكٌthorns ماno لهfor it ثمرfruit
And you—love bears fruit from you in an embrace;
And most love is thorns without fruit
while most love is thorns, bearing no fruit.
You traveled, oh my inspirer, so the abode is a resort
رحلتَyou departed ياO مُلهميmy muse فالدَّارso the house منتجعٌa haven
لطارقِfor the night-visitor of الشجوsorrow أرخىslackened جذعهاits trunk الخدرnumbness
You departed, O my muse, so the house is a haven
For the knocker of passion, its trunk succumbed to decay
for sorrow's night-visitor; numbness has slackened its trunk.
"Mother of villages" your eyes follow asking
" أمmother of القرىthe towns " تقتفيfollows the trail of عينيكyour two eyes سائلةًasking
" أم القرى " تقتفي عينيك سائلةً
يكادُalmost خافقهاher beating heart المجنونmaddened ينفطرُbreaks apart
Umm al-Qura follows the trail of your eyes, asking;
Its crazy throbbing heart almost rupturing
her maddened, beating heart is about to break.
And you are who you are, poetry itself
وأنتand you منwho أنتَyou شعرٌpoetry واكتويتand I was seared بهby it
وأشْعَرُand the most poetic الشعرpoetry شِعرٌpoetry لفظهits wording شررsparks
And you, being who you are, are poetry—and I was seared by it.
And the most eloquent poetry, its words are embers
And the most poetic verse is verse whose words are sparks.
This is your decree, oh my Lord, and You of it
هذاthis قضاؤكYour decree ياO ربِّيmy Lord وأنتand You بهabout it
أدرىbest informed وعبْدُكand Your servant يدريknows أنهthat it is قدرُdestiny
This is Your decree, O my Lord, and You know it
Are more knowing, and Your servant knows it's fate
best; Your servant knows that it is destiny.
And I believe in You my Lord in fate, even if
ومؤمنand a believer بكin You ربِّيmy Lord بالقضاءin the decree وإنْand if

أسرفتُI have exceeded bounds تُبْaccept my repentance ياO إلهيmy God إننيindeed I am بشرُhuman
And I believe in You, my Lord, and in the decree; and if
I transgressed, forgive me, oh my God, I'm only human
I have gone too far, accept my repentance, O my God; indeed, I am human.
