O mountains of al-Sarat—others are forgotten.

You are not among those who die of love and are forgotten.

Between your eyelids, my letters rest.

They shine forth, sweeter and deeper in resonance.

So squeeze the clouds into my mouth and plant me

In lands whose soil and plantings are good.

Teach me love's purity, and explain to me,

O fortresses of madness, a lesson in love.

O mountains of al-Sarat, I have been burdened with care

In an age when humankind was dead to feeling.

All my people are in my burning anguish, in my heart.

How can this grief-stricken heart grow strong?

Those farthest away drink from the overflow of my sorrow.

In my vein, I gathered Bakr and Abs.

As though my palm were a rain cloud for every drought.

My breast was a shield for the sellers of love.

I was water, a tent, and morning.

I used to shine as a sun for those in darkness.

I was a nest for all the downy young of the deserts.

I was a harbor for night travelers in sorrow.

The lovers' voice would come thundering,

And I poured out love in whispers.

And my loved ones pretended to forget the color of my face.

I became, in their judgment, disgrace and filth.

They drank from my blood and sucked out my nectar.

And they held a wedding atop the tragedy.

And their necks craned to bid me farewell.

They raise their palms—Romans and Persians.

And I, in my blood, sing for my people,

Preserving for time what is not forgotten,

Carrying their cares as an eternal heartache.

And I suffer so I may become harsher today.
