My beloved, my song has run dry, and my mouth has run dry.

And barrenness has put forth leaves in my palm and in my pen.

I question the night, O my Layla, about my radiance,

about my solitude, my moments of fading, and my weariness.

Where shall I begin? My sorrows have aged:

a sea of sorrow from my head to my feet.

A traveler upon the waves of letters, on paper

to which I entrusted the flood of my sorrows and the fragrance of my blood.

A traveler—my era does not grasp my journey,

nor has my melody stirred my companion on the road.

I weep blood when I see al-Qa'qa'—returning are

his shattered ranks, some captive, some defeated.

His horses stand silent and dejected on the firing line,

watching for reinforcements coming from nothingness,

watching the free Arabs, in whose blood

    al-Muthanna boils, and a thousand Mu'tasims boil.

And they did not know that God's rope was severed,

and that, for conquest, they had deemed a swollen man stout.

I weep blood, O orbit of poetry, when I see

the cradle of glad tidings, a spring for all my thirst.

Tribes enamored of the sparks of hatred,

fiery-faced, from Sidon to the Pyramid.

Their black borders—beneath their darkness perish

the rays of love, kinship, and ties of blood.

I weep blood when I see al-Qa'qa'—in his hand

a shackle by which he is led at the United Nations.

My little son! And history rose up, slapping me,

so I lost my way between bitter hope and regret.

I read in his wheat-colored face an epic

of punishment, and a volcano of pain.

Yesterday he measured out pride, smiling,

    and today—a scowling face, unsmiling!

    فانظرْ بربّكَ مَنْ خَصمي ومن حَكَمي؟

    My little son, this is the tragedy, plain to see;

so look, by your Lord: who is my adversary, and who my judge?

The hooves of my horses were in their skulls,

embedded, and my banner upon their shoulders.

So my first qibla was cast down,

when I followed my feet onto the path of doom.

I bade him farewell, weeping over an age

in which truth had become a kind of accusation.

    فالهمُّ أكبرُ من حجمي ومن هِمَمي

    I weep and know my measure, O my tormented one;

for anguish is greater than my measure and my aspirations.

    فالنومُ فوقَ الرزايا ليس من شِيَمي

    But I carry the burdens, seeking God's reward;

for sleeping upon calamities is not my way.
