    I was ornate poetry,

    And a well-tuned song,

And morning and gentle, steady rain,

    And balsam and irises.

    My words were soaring,

    And my heart was fortified.

And my song was a cloud,

Beneath which radiance puts forth leaves.

    كلما انداح دندنا

    It breathes life into the pebbles;

Whenever it spread outward, it hummed.

Then love made my blood fair game,

    And built upon its shores.

    And my poems turned into

    A pearl that awakens weariness.

    I became sorrow's qibla,

And an airport and a homeland.

For sorrow could not find for itself

A dwelling except at my side.

This is the tale of humankind:

    Poverty and wealth bring weariness.

    Many a white-marked heart,

    Whose light illumined the worlds,

Flew in a flock not its own,

    Then swayed and yielded.

So take me with my anguish,

And accept me as I am.
