How unbearable the shame! Where do I begin with shame?

And how shall I sing, O History, what has come to pass?

Where can I find an intoxicated language to load with

my anguish, so it bears snow and fire for me?

From where, O nation I dowered with my radiance?

I watered her with rivers from my tender youth.

I gave her a free, beating heart and a rhyme

virgin—and the rhymes of poetry were virgins.

They were panting beside Omar al-Mukhtar,

but after him they found no chosen one among the people.

They were leafy upon the thresholds of home,

and today the knights of passion have squandered the home.

O my letters, do not blame me: I am human.

I see the wall that never trembled lying in ruins.

I see sorrow in people's faces; I grasp it—

a fang traveling through my heart, and claws.

So how can I keep silent about a wound that torments me?

And how can I write excuses after today?

    تمتد آفاقها ظِلاً وأستارا

    Where shall I begin? The whole earth is desolate;

its horizons stretch out as shadow and veils.

    بعد العراجين صار الطَّلعُ صُبَّارا

    The faces of the green hills have turned grim;

after the date-cluster stalks, the palm blossom has become cactus.

I never deceived you with love; never did

my poems conceal secrets from companions on the road.

They fluttered over your wound, kissing it,

and drew dreams and ideas from it.

The blast of the wild winds grows fiercer, O my homeland,

yet the pole of your white tent has not swayed.

It has not swayed; a sword and a minaret protect it,

both were its defenders through the nights of trembling.

Both would say, while the pitch-dark gale was grief:

“If you are a wind, you have indeed met a hurricane.”

    يعودُ يبدأُ في المأساة مِشوارا

    The steed stumbles, with a soft neigh in its eyes;

it returns to begin a journey through tragedy.

It returns, knowing that time has never sustained

its conquests; good fortune begets ill fortune.

O my nation, the oppressors plant in my eyelashes

a sword, and above the sword I plant revolutionaries.

Their resolve has only grown stronger to make me

more resolute than a wave of darkness.

And whenever an oppressor grows more tyrannical,

I grow in esteem in the oppressors' eyes.

Yes, I stumbled, and this is my caravan's dawn,

it has surged to wash disgrace and shame from me.

I once forgot my barricades and my map,

but I never forgot the wound or vengeance.
