How often we claim to love letters and write,

And say that we grow weary with love for you,

And melt in your eyes as the fragrance of a poem,

An Arabic poem—and drink from weeping eyes.

    فإلى متى نجني عليك ونكذب

    And melt golden throats in you;

So how long will we wrong you and lie?

My homeland, from whom I hid my experiences

In love—how many a seasoned lover has not known passion!

Shall I complain of you, or of the loved ones who broke

Love's promise, while the lovers stayed away?

They fled; never have I known a true lover

To shun the face of one who offered love!

Here you are, O river of wounds, a map,

Deaf, with no tongue to speak plainly.

And when wounds beset a beating heart,

Neither medicine nor healer can help it.

You plunged deep into the shadows, stubbornly,

And the paths of those who tread the dark keep branching.

You watched the green lightning drive a cloud

That sears thirst—but your lightning brings no rain.

Let no stars deceive you with their glitter,

For the stars of your conquest are "two dancers" and "a singer."

Once, whenever Damascus shook at some event,

Sidon's heights would stir, and the Maghreb would surge.

And today, at al-Aqsa, your wounds gush freely,

And your palm is barren, your back hunched.

    Bakr, whose heart defiance filled—

Taghlib caught up with her for fear of disgrace.

Stacked boxes, above which runs riot

The army of darkness; each house has its creed.

They cast all their cares upon your forearms,

And for the lovesick one's face, they will strike.

They offer you frail pages of weeping,

Their letters ashamed, their brow dripping sweat.

My homeland, in my eyes are a thousand tales,

Rapturous, and a thousand poems ablaze.

I sinned in my love, which I kept concealed

Deliberately—and some love is sinful love.

I have not robbed you, O axis of my feelings,

Of glory; for your glory is eternal, never to be stolen.

I have not denied the taste of longing for you; it is

To me, sweeter than the sweetest, and more delightful.

    أنَّى لمن لعق المصائبَ يلعبُ ؟

    I have not played with my letters and my emotions;

How could one who has licked calamities play?

But I was made to bear the burden of love,

And love, in an age of sorrow, is thought strange!

The hearts of lovers remain faithful,

And the hearts of those who don love are fickle.

I weep for the one who made me weep; my skin flees

From me, and my mouth is boxed in by wounds.

I searched for a love to bestow, but did not

Find anything but a sigh that never runs dry.

So from it I poured a shudder into your vein,

And glory puts forth leaves from blood poured out.

I am here, but Haifa is in my blood,

And my mouth waters with the taste of her pus.

The black borders vanish beneath my poems,

And love is greater than borders raised up.

My words are hard, O homeland that

I love; yet flattery is harder.

And strange is the lover's state when he complains,

But the state of traitors is stranger still.
