لاdo not تلمنيblame me فلاfor ... not يلامis blamed الجريحthe wounded one
حينwhen يشكوhe complains ، وحينand when تشكوcomplain الجروحُthe wounds
Do not blame me, for the wounded man is not blamed
Blame me not, for the wounded is not blamed
when he complains, and when the wounds complain.
When he complains, and when the wounds complain
لاdo not تلمنيblame me فلاfor ... not يُلامis blamed طريدٌan outcast
لاnot يلامis blamed المظلومthe wronged one حينwhen يصحُrecovers
Do not blame me, for an outcast is not blamed.
Blame me not, for the outcast is not blamed
The wronged one is not blamed when he recovers.
The oppressed is not blamed when he cries out
لاdo not تلمنيblame me ، لمْblame خافقاًa beating heart بينbetween جنبيـthe two sides
ـكyour (suffix) ، لمdid not يخفقْthrob ، لمdid not تحتضنهembrace it القروحُthe sores
Do not blame me; blame a heart between your
Blame me not, why between my ribs
sides, one that has not throbbed, that sores have not embraced.
Did it not beat, did the wounds not nurture it
وand أناI لنwill not ألومblame منwhoever ماتdied حسّاًin feeling
إنماonly اللومblame للذيfor the one who فيهin him روحُa soul
And I will not blame one who is dead to feeling;
And I will not blame he who died in feeling
blame is only for one with a soul.
Rather the blame is upon he who still has soul
لاdo not تلمنيblame me وجهيmy face يلومblames صنيعيmy deed
وفؤاديand my heart فوقatop المآسيthe tragedies طريحُprostrate
Do not blame me; my face reproaches what I have done,
Blame me not, my face blames my deeds
and my heart lies prostrate atop tragedies.
And my heart above the tragedies lies broken

How often I see, among faces, a face like yours—
How many faces like yours I see
an Arab face that turns away from all good.
Arabic, averting all good, turning away

It is a world where some people have died of worry,
It is a world, some of its people died of worries
while many of its inhabitants are at ease.
And many of its inhabitants are at rest
أناI ياO سيّديsir; my lord صريحٌfrank بحبّيabout my love

I, sir, am frank about my love,
I, my master, am frank in my love
and he who keeps his pledges is frank.
And he who keeps promises is frank

أوهمتناmade us falsely believe أنthat الرثاءَlamentation مديحpraise
Some poems deliberately numbed us;
Some poems numbed us intentionally
they deluded us into thinking lamentation was praise.
Made us think that elegy is praise
فاتحتناspoke to us بكلّof every فتحٍconquest جديدٍnew

They spoke to us of every new conquest,
It opened us to every new opening
from whose eyes conquests dangle,
Dangling from its eyes are the conquests
وسيوفٌand swords دمُblood of العداthe enemies فيin ظُباهاtheir edges
وجوادٌand a steed عبلُstout الذراعthe foreleg جموحُheadstrong
and swords with the enemies' blood upon their edges,
And swords, the blood of enemies in their sheaths
and a steed, stout of foreleg and headstrong.
And steeds, the forearm bound in fervor
وأرتناand showed us وجهthe face of الحقيقةthe truth كسْفاًdarkened

And they showed us truth's face darkened,
And it showed us the face of truth as disgrace
so the ugly appeared beautiful.
So the ugly appeared and it is beautiful

Do not blame me, O my inspirer, for the rhymes
Blame me not, my worries, for rhymes
have burned me, and poetry is embers and wind.
Burned me, and poetry is embers and wind
ضقتَyou were vexed بالحقby the truth منfrom فميmy mouth يامحبّيO you who love me
ولقدand indeed ينكرrejects الفصيحَthe eloquent one فصيحُan eloquent person
You could not bear the truth from my mouth, O you who love me.
You were vexed, my love, by the truth from my mouth
And one eloquent person may indeed reject another.
And the eloquent surely disavows the eloquent
وأناand I لنwill not يضيقbecome constricted باللومby blame صدريmy breast
إنindeed صدرthe breast of المحبّthe lover كونٌa universe فسيحُvast
And as for me, blame will never constrict my breast;
And I will not be vexed by blame in my chest
indeed, a lover's breast is a vast universe.
For the lover's chest is spacious
