Believe me, I have not come to revoke my decision.

    I cannot revoke a decision.

Believe me, I have not come bearing good news.

The full moon refuses to appear by day.

Believe me, I have not come to breathe out verse

In an age that confiscates poems.

I have come to weep for myself, to weep for you.

For half a century we have been dripping shame.

Believe me, part of me battles part of me.

I was Arab; then half of me became Tatar.

My step plunders the distance, and my right hand

Deliberately erects a wall above my foot.

And my tongue melts into perfume, while my heart

Has become an airport for the wounds of time.

Whenever morning appears to me as a song,

Those who bring darkness lower a curtain before me.

And above them I circle restlessly with my wound.

Who can keep pace with the orbit amid all that turns?

I, my masters, have carried love for you

In my vein, and so my love emerged as sparks.

I did not ride imagination seeking meaning,

While meanings compete in your shade.

    I am a realist—and can a wounded man fly

While the deserts bathe in his blood?

I am a realist; you slip into the wastelands,

So read my visage as sorrow and dust.

I am one of you; I shall borrow no garment

Other than my skin; a free man will not be borrowed.

If there is among us a marginal mouth

That has made falsehood a banner for its letters,

As for me, I have not apologized; I know my role,

And my letters are not skilled in excuses.

I am one of you—two wounds in a free man's chest.

So understand me, if you are free.
