My beloved, my ballad has dried up, and my mouth has dried up.
My beloved turned away, and my friend turned away
And barrenness put forth leaves in my palm and in my pen.
And barrenness withered in my palm and my pen

I question the night, O my Layla, about my radiance,
I ask the night, oh my night, about my condition
About my solitude, my moments of fading, and my weariness.
About my isolation, my waning, and my boredom

An ocean of sadness from my head to my feet

A traveler upon the waves of letters, on paper
A traveler atop the wave of the letter on paper
I entrusted with the flood of my sorrows and the fragrance of my blood.
I entrusted it with the outpouring of my sorrows and the scent of my blood

A traveler, neither my time realizes my journey
Nor has my melody stirred the companion of my path.
Nor the companion of my path shaken by my melody

And they did not know that God's rope was severed,
And it did not realize that God's rope is severed
And that, for conquest, they had mistaken a swollen man for a well-fed one.
And it fattened for the conquest with this disease

The cradle of glad tidings, a wellspring for every thirsty soul—
The cradle of good tidings a spring for every thirsty one

My dear son, this is the tragedy, standing before you;
O my tortured one, this is the tragedy manifest
So look, for your Lord's sake: who is my adversary, and who my judge?
So look, by your Lord, who is my opponent and my judge?

The bits of my horses were implanted in their skulls
Embedded, and on their shoulders was my banner.
And my flag was on their shoulders

When I followed my foot along the path of doom.
When I followed the path of ruin with my feet

I bid it farewell as I cried over a time
In which truth had become a kind of accusation.
In which truth tomorrow becomes a kind of accusation

فالهمُّ أكبر من حجمي ومن همي
I weep, and I know my stature, O my tormentor;
I cry and I know my size, oh my tortured one
For the grief is greater than my stature and than my own grief.
For the worry is bigger than my size and my worry

فالنوم فوق الرزايا ليس من شيمي
But I carry the burdens, seeking God's reward,
But I carry the burdens with acceptance
For sleeping atop calamities is not in my nature.
For sleep on suffering is not of my morals
