A mouth boils with people's wounds and draws from them,

And sings and plays for the hidden mode.

A mouth came, dawnlike in its beginnings; its color

Is morning, and within its dimensions sorrow falls in flakes.

So if its taste comes bitter, let it not alarm you,

For it bleeds from your wound, O palm tree of sorrow.

It came naked; its poetry has no skill in deceit,

And most of this age's poetry is counterfeit poetry.

My letters are a blaze, O my masters, not because I am

Violent, but because the wound is harsher and more violent.

I carried the expanse between my eyes as burning anguish,

And here I am upon the embers, boiling and shedding tears.

I dispel my silence with my letters' renewed stirrings,

And send forth my rhymes, which go unadorned.

And read the corners' dimensions and their pulse,

And know of my time what is not known.

And perceive the visions between the lines,

And what the wind contains when it rages,

And what the boulder cradles in its deepest depths,

And what drives the sparrow when it calls.

And by this I do not claim to know the unseen; indeed, I

Love, so what is not revealed appears to me.

I see faces without color as maps,

Their terrain is barrenness and shrouded silence.

I see a nation whose visions are bleak,

And its eye is white, and its face gaunt.

My brother, when I urge the pale camels on with song, turns back,

Despondent, calling: “Stop the pale camels! Stop!”

So I urge the tribe's riders: “Press on, for our destination

Is near, and love's tryst will not fail.”

Then I see the mounts' forms abased,

A fearmonger fetters them, keeping them from the goal.

Because I am frank, with a thousand pangs in my mouth,

And take a stand against the piled debris of the ignorant,

They shout in my face without any respect:

“Our passion is civilized, and this is backwardness.”

So I kiss my wound, retreating into my poems,

And press on toward my goal, with a Qur'an in my heart.

And I am certain religion is ease for humankind,

For the Lord of humankind never said: “Go to extremes.”

But some people are either obstinate,

Or side with whoever said, “A fodder-fed bull.”

I have come to know humankind: the sore-eyed do not love light,

Nor do the pampered understand winter's cold.

And most people on earth seek dominion,

Yet they are empty-armed and hollow.
