    From our dawn, reverence shone forth and blazed.

    A dawn like this one we forged, you will never find.

    فهاتِ ماءً طهوراً يغسلُ العُقدا

    With our purity, history washed its knot clean;

    So bring purifying water that washes the knots.

    فربما كان يُخفي تحته رمدا

    Not every eyelid that rains tears dies of love;

    For perhaps it was hiding inflammation beneath it.

    صُغنا بها المجد هبْ لي كاليدين يدا

    From us... and from us, a dewy hand and a forelock;

    With it we forged glory; grant me a hand like those two hands.

    تفنى نجوم المعالي تحته كمدا

    Qutayba is from us—a sun when we trace his lineage;

    The stars of greatness fade beneath him in anguish.

    I answered her: From you, the sap shone as a dawn of piety,

    And from your countenance, glory flowed as a river of guidance.

    And time is two days—what will you do if

    Calamity overwhelms you, or darkness falls tomorrow?

    I know full well that people have denied,

    Nor will anyone who denies harm the sun's radiance.

    But I see the days looking grim

    In the depths of your eyes—not out of disparagement or envy.

    Do not weave a kingdom from the threads of illusion,

    And do not say: The nights of time will never give birth.

    For on this earth there is no sword for Bahila

    Amid the swirling dust, nor a voice to return an echo.

    Samarqand weeps; no horses come to her at dawn,

    Nor does Qutayba's face come as succor.
