    They rise from every horizon,

Each face among them is like the face of a shooting star,

With sturdy bodies atop the hills,

And hearts hovering above the clouds.

They fill existence with love and war,

And roam it in green garments.

They defy injustice with the sword, and death

With courage, and desire with the Book.

They are coming, more tender than birds,

    And fiercer than angry lions.

Like inevitable fate—for dawn follows the night—

Like the sun through veils of fog.

They raise Islam as light and fire

Throughout the world, after estrangement and absence.

So embrace them, O earth, if you wish for good,

And scatter them as torches over the hills.

Or else repel the surging tide—which is impossible—

Or else quake, and proclaim ruin.

And stumbling on their path, and pressing onward,

    And mirage looming behind mirage.

They may grow weary for a while, and may complain,

Like other people, of battling hardships.

They may stray, but they return,

As falcons, to the right path.

Here is their path: long, and strewn

With sorrow's embers and hard-jointed spears.

    كلُّ كـهف يُـودي إلى سـرداب

    Along its length the devils have caves;

Every cave leads to an underground passage.

And behold, the hunted are captives in the underground passages,

Swallowing suffering, the worst of rewards,

From cups like poison, seething with whatever

Kinds of torment the pharaohs desire.

And behold, across the land are radiant faces,

    Brimming with dignity and dejection.

Such is God's way, and flocks

Of guides follow in the footsteps of flocks.

They are coming: gold does not blind them,

Nor do the wolves' fangs turn them back.

They journey through life, radiant, with the wisdom

Of mature men, which nourishes the madness of youth.

And they live by God's way in freedom,

And die amid the thrusts of spears.
