خَجِلْتُI felt ashamed لِطُولِfor the many times مَاthat عَاهَدتُI pledged to رَبِّيmy Lord
عَلَىto التَّقْوَىpiety، وَمَاand how often جَدَّدْتُI renewed تَوْبِيmy repentance
I have grown ashamed at how long I have pledged myself to my Lord,
I am ashamed of how often I have pledged to my Lord
To piety, yet have never renewed my repentance.
to live in piety, and how often I have renewed my repentance.
أُعَاهِدُهُI pledge to Him دُجًىin night's darkness وَأَعُودُand I relapse ظُهْرًاat noon
وَأَسْأَلُهُand I ask Him دُجًىin night's darkness غُفْرَانَforgiveness of ذَنْبِيmy sin
I pledge myself to Him by night, then relapse by noon,
I pledge to Him in night's darkness, and relapse at noon,
And by night I ask Him to forgive my sin.
and in night's darkness ask Him to forgive my sin.
خَجِلْتُI felt ashamed، إِلاَمَuntil when أَبْقَىI remain وَالمَعَاصِيwhile sins
كَمَوْجِlike the waves of البَحْرِthe sea فِيin دَفْعٍpushing وَجَذْبِand pulling
I am ashamed—how long shall I remain while transgressions
I am ashamed—how long shall I go on, with sins
Are like the waves of the sea in their thrust and pull?
like the sea's waves in their push and pull?
فَمَاfor no مِنْof (emphatic) مَوْسِمٍseason لِلْخَيْرِfor goodness وَلَّىhas passed
وَلَمْand did not يَعْجَبْmarvel لِحَالِيat my state أَيُّany عَجْبِamazement!
No season of goodness has ever passed
For no season of goodness has passed
Without marveling utterly at my condition!
without being utterly astonished at my state!
إِذَاwhen رَمَضَانُRamadan أَقْبَلَcomes قُلْتُI said: هَذَاthis
لَمَوْسِمُindeed a season تَوْبَةٍrepentance وَهُدًىand guidance وَقُرْبِand nearness
Whenever Ramadan arrives, I say: This
When Ramadan comes, I say: This
Is surely a season of repentance, guidance, and nearness.
is indeed a season of repentance, guidance, and nearness.
وَأَزْمَعُand I resolve أَنْthat يَكُونَbe النُّورُlight رُوحِيmy spirit
وَأَطْمَعُand I hope أَنْthat يَكُونَbe الطُّهْرُpurity ثَوْبِيmy garment
I resolve that light shall be my spirit,
And I resolve that light shall be my spirit,
And hope that purity shall be my garment.
and I hope that purity shall be my garment.
وَفِيand at عَرَفَاتِArafat عَامًاa year بَعْدَafter عَامٍa year
أَتُوبُI repent، غَدَاةَin the morning أَصْمُتُI am silent، أَوْor أُلَبِّيI chant the pilgrim's response
And at ʿArafat, year after year,
And at Arafat, year after year,
I repent at dawn, whether silent or chanting “Labbayk.”
I repent in the morning, whether silent or chanting the pilgrim's response;
وَأَرْجِعُand I return بَعْدَهَاafter it مِنْfrom حَيْثُwhere آتِيI come
إِلَىto خَطَئِيmy wrongdoing وَزَلاَّتِيand my lapses وَكَرْبِيand my anguish
Then afterward I return the way I came,
and afterward I return whence I came,
To my errors, my lapses, and my anguish.
to my wrongdoing, my lapses, and my anguish.
فَهَلْso, have...? كُلُّall الْمَوَاسِمِthe seasons كُنَّthey were بُورًاbarren
وَلَمْand did not يُفْلِحْنَthey succeed فِيin إِخْصَابِmaking fertile جَدْبِيmy barrenness؟!
So were all those seasons barren, then,
So have all the seasons been barren,
And did they fail to make my barrenness fruitful?!
and failed to bring fertility to my barrenness?

أَلاَbehold إِنِّيindeed I لَأَعْلَمُI surely know أَنَّthat يَوْمِيmy day
كَأَمْسِيlike my yesterday، ضَاعَwas wasted فِيin لَعِبٍplay وَرُعْبِand dread
Behold, I know full well that my day,
Indeed, I know full well that my day,
Like my yesterday, was lost in play and fear,
like my yesterday, was wasted in play and dread,
وَفِيand in أَشْوَاقِlongings of رُوحٍa soul لاَnot تُلَبَّىare fulfilled
تُبَعْثِرُهَاscatter them الرِّيَاحُthe winds بِكُلِّin every صَوْبِdirection
And in the longings of a soul never fulfilled,
and in a soul's unfulfilled longings,
Scattered by the winds in every direction,
scattered by the winds in every direction,
وَآمَالٍand hopes عِذَابٍsweet قَدْalready تَهَاوَتْhave collapsed
كَمَاjust as تَهْوِيfall المُنَىwishes فِيin صَدْرِthe breast of صَبِّa lovesick lover
And in sweet hopes that have come crashing down,
and sweet hopes that have collapsed,
As cherished wishes fall within an ardent lover’s breast.
as wishes fall within a lover's breast.
وَلَكِنِّيbut I أُعَزِّيI console النَّفْسَthe self أَنِّيthat I
أَشُقُّI carve مِنَfrom الصُّخُورِthe rocks الصُّمِّsolid دَرْبِيmy path
Yet I console myself with this: that I
But I console myself with the thought that I
Hew my path through solid, deaf rocks,
carve my path through solid rocks,
وَأُبْرِمُand I chafe بِالصَّغَائِرِat the lesser sins مِنْof ذُنُوبِيmy sins
وَأَجْتَنِبُand I shun الكَبَائِرَthe major sins، وَهْيَthough they تَسْبِيcaptivate
Grow weary of the lesser sins among my sins,
and chafe at the lesser of my sins,
And shun the major ones, though they take captive.
and shun the major sins, though they captivate me,
وَأَسْعَىand I strive نَحْوَtoward رَبِّيmy Lord فِيin ثَبَاتٍsteadfastness
وَأَمْنَحُهُand I give Him بِحُبٍّwith love ذَوْبَthe molten essence of قَلْبِيmy heart.
I move steadfastly toward my Lord,
and strive toward my Lord with steadfastness,
And lovingly offer Him the molten essence of my heart.
and offer Him, with love, my heart's molten essence.
