For two decades of my life I have suffered without

Hope to console me, and my ill fortune will not relent.

I strive to obtain a means by which to live,

And drive away a godless hunger, O believers.

Reason in my two palms has grown silent with grief,

And the covenant has been exhausted by the betrayal of oath-breakers.

They laugh together when they encounter my misfortunes,

And I, bleeding with my sorrow, count the years.

Many are the roads whose passes I have traversed,

And I returned, let down by unyielding delay.

Thirsty, I run without provisions, wandering,

And slaughter has gazed hungrily for some time.

It hopes to uproot me without any futile wrenching,

And the soul, like me, makes light of tragedies.

How many eyes they dispatched behind me to track

The traces of my pens, and they returned disappointed.

And they clung like flies to my letters,

Eavesdropping on my gaze's sobbing and the moans.

Like sleeplessness in the eyelids, they wreaked havoc; and sorrow

Has crushed me utterly, and the buzzing has made me miserable.

They denounced only a sea that was driven

By the oar, by force, toward a miserly harbor.

No shade is to be hoped for my expanse there,

Or a fire in the bays to welcome the famine-stricken.

I fold my remains atop my bier, treading

A path full of harm; I do not yield,

Until I lift sorrow from myself, hoping for

My heart's flash in the dark nights of the destitute,

Or encounter the illusion of my acquisition, arising

From the bleeding of my pains, and give the dreamers drink.
