لَقَدْindeed كَذَبَتْshe lied وَحُقَّand it was fitting لَهَاfor her حَذَامِHadhām
وَأَلْقَتْand she cast aside بِالمُنَىthe hopes بَعْدَafter الوِئَامِharmony
Hadhām has indeed lied, as befitted her,
And cast hopes aside after harmony.
وَكَانَand was الصِّدْقُtruth قَبْلُformerly لَهَاfor her رَفِيقاًa companion
فَصَارَتْso she became وَالقَطَاand the sandgrouse وَقْرَdeafness النِّيَامِof the sleepers
And truth had once been her companion,
Then she and the sandgrouse became the sleepers’ deafness.
وَلَوْand if أَنَّthat السُّيُوفَswords مَلَكْتُI possessed يَوْماًone day
لَجِئْتُI would have come مُقَاتِلاًfighting بَدَلَinstead of السَّلاَمِpeace
And if I had ever possessed swords,
I would have come fighting, rather than in peace.
وَلَكِنْand yet وَيْحَهُalas for it الإِفْلاَسُpennilessness قَاسٍharsh
وَمَنْand whoever يُفْلِسْbecomes penniless يَعِشْlives دُونَwithout احْتِرَامِrespect
But pennilessness—alas for it—is harsh,
And whoever becomes penniless lives without respect.
تَمَنَّىwished القَلْبُthe heart أَنَّاthat we مَاnot التَقَيْنَاwe met
وَلَمْand did not يَسْقَمْfall ill بِهَاbecause of her يَوْماًever حُطَامِيmy shattered remains
The heart wished that we had never met,
And that my shattered self had never sickened because of her.
تَبَدَّتْshe appeared مِثْلَlike غُصْنِa bough of البَانِthe bān tree زَيْفاًdeceptively
وَسَاقَتْنِيand she drove me إِلَىto جُبِّthe pit of الغَرَامِpassion
She appeared, deceptively, like a bān-tree bough,
And drove me into the pit of passion.
أَرَادَتْshe wanted هَاتِفاًa phone لِيَكُونَso it would be وَصْلاًa connection
فَقَدْfor indeed أَزْرَىbrought low بِهَاher هَوْلُthe terror of الهُيَامِinfatuation
She wanted a phone to serve as a link,
For the terror of infatuation had brought her low.
وَكَانَتْand she would كُلَّمَاwhenever اسْتَمَعَتْshe listened لِصَوْتِيto my voice
تَكُرُّwould charge جُيُوشُهَاher armies تَرْجُوhoping for اغْتِنَامِيseizing me as spoils
And whenever she listened to my voice,
Her armies would charge, hoping to take me as spoils.
تَخَافُshe fears اللَيْلَthe night لَكِنْbut حِينَwhen أَبْدُوI appear
تَهُبُّshe springs up بِشَوْقِهَاwith her longing رَغْمَdespite الظَّلاَمِthe darkness
She fears the night, but when I appear,
She springs up with longing despite the darkness.
تَقُولُshe says بِأَنَّهَاthat she شُغِفَتْwas smitten بِحُبِّيwith love for me
وَأَنِّيand that I عِنْدَهَاin her eyes خَيْرُthe best of الأَنَامِhumankind
She says she is smitten with love for me,
And that, in her eyes, I am the best of humankind.
أَرَادَتْshe wanted أَنْthat يَكُونَthere be لَهَاfor her جَوَازٌa passport
فَشَهْرُfor a month الشَّهْدِof honey يُرْجَىis hoped for لِلْكِرَامِfor the noble
She wanted to have a passport,
For the noble, a honeymoon is to be hoped for.
وَقَالَتْand she said أَنْتَyou مَنْthe one whom تَرْجُوهُlongs for him رُوحِيmy soul
فَجُدْso be generous بِالبَذْلِin giving وَلْتَحْذَرْand beware خِصَامِيmy hostility
And she said, “You are the one my soul longs for,
So give generously, and beware my hostility.
فَكَمْfor how many مِنْof غَايَةٍa goal لِيof mine لَمْnot تُنَفَّذْbeen fulfilled
وَلَمْand did not تَحْظَreceive المَطَالِبُthe demands بِاهْتِمَامِattention
For so many wishes of mine have gone unfulfilled,
And the demands have received no attention.”
فَحَارَso was bewildered البَذْلُgiving إِذْsince قَدْalready ضَاقَhad run short ذَرْعاًof patience
فَلَمْso it did not يَجْسُرْdare فَجَاسَتْso she prowled لاِتِّهَامِيto accuse me
So giving was bewildered, its patience spent;
It dared not; so she prowled about to accuse me
بِأَنِّيof the fact that I لَسْتُI am not أَهْوَاهَاlove her وَأَنِّيand that I
عَدِيمُdevoid of الحِسِّfeeling ذُوpossessing عَقْلٍa mind هُلاَمِيjellylike
Of not loving her, and of being
Devoid of feeling, with a jellylike mind.
وَأَلْقَتْand she cast aside بِالعُهُودِthe pledges لأَجْلِfor the sake of وَغْدٍa scoundrel
وَحَتَّىand even الوَغْدَthe scoundrel خَانَتْshe betrayed فِيin الخِتَامِthe end
And she cast aside her pledges for a scoundrel,
And betrayed even the scoundrel in the end.
