I have been touched by betrayal from those in whom I seek refuge,

And was slaughtered at the hands of my loved ones.

For nothing, they tore my heart to shreds,

And made my enemies gloat over me at the slaughter.

Indeed, I was deceived by those I had thought

The closest of all people; sleeplessness shattered every part of me,

Until I met a beautiful woman whose radiance

Dispelled my sorrow and cast my ailment into the blaze.

Fair of face—when she appears, she has

Refined taste and a perfume that intoxicates those far away.

A houri from the gardens of eternity, sent down by

My Lord as a remedy, so she might uproot my exhaustion.

She made my heart forget the woman who destroyed our joy,

And her dagger was drawn from within my entrails.

I fell in love with her, but the sea separates us,

And behind us, the desert wastes enfold the lament of my echoes.

And my little boat was shattered yesterday by a storm

That blew upon my shore without rainstorms.

So it ravaged poetry until I became a rhyme

That criticism cannot accept, so discordant are my rhyme vowels.

Then the soul was restored once more after death's agony,

Despite their bombarding my neighborhoods in wrath.

    I have long been love-stricken, O beauty,

And longing wore out my shadows before separation.

Are you human, or one who came from Abqar?

And is there union on my night journey?

The time difference has divided our planet,

So morning is your light, while night is my darkness.
