     وَلَيلي لا أُحِسُّ لَهُ انصِراما

    Sleepless, I spent the night without tasting sleep;

    And I sense no ending to my night.

    By your life, the fates of death prevail,

    And amulets offer no defence against death.

    Talid indeed sped toward his place of death,

    And death drove him from Adham

    To a grave beside al-Jaww, where firmly rests

    The one who alighted there, then stayed.

    I see that days spare no noble man,

    Nor the roaming, white-footed ibex or the ostriches.

    إِذا سامَت عَلى المَلَقاتِ ساما

    For it, a short-necked little man in a worn cloak was destined;

    When they graze on the smooth rocks, he prowls.

    يَشُنُّ عَلى ثَمائِلِها السِماما

    Barely visible, he has power over them;

    He pours poison over their water-pools.

    He beats them to their watering places, then shoots

    Their vital spots and makes them drink swift death.

    Nor two wild asses frequenting a meadow,

    With fresh, tall herbage growing in pairs.

    تَخالُ نَسيلَ مَتنَيهِ الثَغاما

    Each wild ass is crook-necked and hulking;

    You would take the shed hair of its back for thagham grass.

    They spent the night longing for the waters of Badr,

    And feared an archer, so drew back from it.

    فَآبَتَ نَبلُهُ قِصَداً حُطاما

    Both darted away, escaping, while he stood shooting;

    His arrows came back broken into splinters.

    As though, when they mounted rocky ground

    And a crossing through a lava-field, they flung up stones.

    They sent great stones tumbling,

    When both swerved and when they ran straight.

    So they spent the night awake until

    Dawn shone, breaking clear, and they rose.

    Even if they escaped the peril of one land,

    They met their deaths inescapably.

    And at sunrise they met a troop of horsemen,

    Scenting wild game—you would take them for tents—

    Each on a long-legged, headstrong stallion

    That outstrips the lanky rider's hand and bridle.

    They drove spears into the chests of both,

    Of al-Khatt, steeped in poison.

    And my weeping for Talid was recalled to me

    By a dove of Marr that answered the doves.

    She trilled a wondrous call and rose high,

    Like a mourning woman coming to mourners on their feet.

    She calls 'Saq Hurr,' while I kept calling

    Talid; she utters no clear words about him.

    Perhaps you are doomed, if a youth

    Has made his dwelling in Shamansir.
