لَوif أَنَّthat أَصحابيmy companions بَنوthe sons of مُعاوِيَهMuawiya
لَو أَنَّ أَصحابي بَنو مُعاوِيَه
أَهلُthe people of جُنوبِthe sides of نَخلَةِNakhla الشَآمِيَّهal-Shamiyya
أَهلُ جُنوبِ نَخلَةِ الشَآمِيَّه
Had my companions been the sons of Muawiya,
If my comrades were the clan of Mu'awiyah
the people dwelling along the sides of Nakhla al-Shamiyya,
The people of southern Syria's palm trees
ماnot تَرَكونيthey left me لِلكِلابِto the dogs العاوِيَهhowling
ما تَرَكوني لِلكِلابِ العاوِيَه
وَلاnor لِبِرذَونٍto a packhorse اَغَرِّwhite-blazed الناصِيَهthe forehead
وَلا لِبِرذَونٍ اَغَرِّ الناصِيَه
they would not have left me to the howling dogs,
They wouldn't have left me to the rabid dogs
nor to a packhorse with a white blaze on its forehead.
Nor to a vile, deceitful betrayer
