وَماand not إِنemphasizing the negation صَوتُvoice نائِحَةٍa mourning dove بِلَيلٍat night
بِسَبلَلَat Sablal لاnot تَنامُshe sleeps مَعَwith الهُجودِthe sleepers
And surely no voice of a mourning dove at night
The wail of a mourner in the night
at Sablal, sleepless among the sleepers—
With chains that keep her from sleep alongside the meek
تَجَهناwe met face to face غادِيَينِboth setting out at dawn فَساءَلَتنيthen she asked me
بِواحِدِهاabout her only one وَأَسأَلُand I ask عَنabout تَليديmy Talid
We met, both setting out at dawn; then she asked me
Crossed my path while I was walking, so she asked me
about her only one, and I ask about my Talid.
With one question, and I ask about my ancestry
فَقُلتُso I said لَهاto her فَأَمّاthen as for ساقُSaq حُرٍّHurr
فَبانَso he departed مَعَwith الأَوائِلِthe earliest ones مِنof ثَمودِThamud
So I said to her: "As for Saq Hurr,
So I said to her: As for the leg of a free man
he departed with the earliest of Thamud."
It was evident early on among the Thamud
وَقالَتand she said لَنwill not تَرىyou see أَبَداًever تَليداًTalid
بِعَينِكَwith your eye آخِرَto the end of العُمرِlife الجَديدِnew
And she said: "You will never see Talid
And she said: “You will never see ancestry
with your own eyes, to the end of the life still ahead."
With your eyes in the last of your new life”
كِلاناeach of us رَدَّanswered صاحِبَهُhis companion بِيَأسٍwith despair
وَتَأنيبٍand reproach وَوِجدانٍand finding بَعيدِfar off
Each of us answered the other with despair,
Both of us turned away from the other in despair
and reproach, and little hope of finding the lost.
And rebuke and a distant sorrow
