قرأتُI read مجدَكِyour glory فيin قلبيmy heart وand فيin الكُتُـبِthe books
أنتِyou المجدُglory لمdid not يَغِبِvanish
I read your glory in my heart and in the books.
I read your glory in my heart and in books
Damascus, what is glory? You are glory; it has never vanished.
Damascus, what is glory? You are the eternal glory
إذاwhenever علىalong بَـرَدَىthe Barada حَـوْرٌpoplars تأهَّلoffered welcome بيto me
أحسسْتُI felt أعلامَكِyour banners اختالتْstrutted proudly علىabove الشّهُبِthe shooting stars
Whenever poplars along the Barada welcomed me,
When the full moon rises over Barada
I felt your banners strut above the shooting stars.
I feel your flags fluttering over the blaze
أيّـامَin the days when عاصِمَةُthe capital of الدّنياthe world هُـنَاhere رَبطَـتْbound
بِـعَزمَتَيto the two resolves of أُمَـويٍّan Umayyad عَزْمَـةَthe resolve of الحِقَـبِthe ages
In the days when the world's capital here bound
The capital of the world tied here
the resolve of the ages to an Umayyad's twin resolves.
The resolve of the Umayyads to the resolve of eras
نادتْshe called فَهَـبَّso he sprang up إلىtoward هِنـدٍIndia وand أنـدلُـسٍal-Andalus
كَغوطةٍlike a Ghouta مِنof شَباthe points of المُـرَّانِash-wood spears والقُضُـبِand swords
She called, and he sprang toward India and al-Andalus,
It called and rushed to India and Andalusia
like a Ghouta of pointed ash-wood spears and swords.
Like a flood of youths with spears and staves
خلَّـتْshe left علىon قِمَمِthe summits of التّارِيـخِhistory طابَعَـهاher imprint
وعلّمَـتْand she taught أنّـهُthat it بالفتْـكَـةِby the deadly stroke العَجَـبِwondrous
She left her imprint on the summits of history,
It left its mark on the peaks of history
and taught that glory is won by the wondrous, deadly stroke.
And taught that glory comes through conquest
وand إنماonly الشعـرُpoetry شرطُthe condition of الفتكةِthe deadly stroke ارتُجلَتwas improvised
علىupon العُـلاthe heights وand تَمَلَّـتْreveled in رِفعَـةَthe loftiness of القِبَبِthe domes
And poetry alone is the deadly stroke's condition: it was improvised
Poetry is the condition for glorious conquest, it was improvised
upon the heights, and reveled in the loftiness of domes.
Exalted on heights, aspiring to the highest domes
هذيthis one لهاfor her النصرُvictory لاnone أبهىmore splendid، فلاso not هُزمتshe was defeated
وإنand even if تهَـدّدهاthreatened her دَهـرٌan age مـنَof النُـوَبِcalamities
This one has victory—none more splendid; she was never defeated,
Victory is hers, nothing more splendid, though
even if an age of calamities threatened her.
An age of misfortunes threatens her
وand الانتصارُvictory لعَـاليfor one holding high الـرّأسِthe head مُنْحَتِمٌinevitable
حُلواًsweet كماlike المَوتُdeath،جئتَyou came to المَوتَdeath لمdid not تَهَبِyou fear
And victory is inevitable for one who holds his head high,
Victory for the high of head is destined
sweet as death, when you meet death unafraid.
Sweet as death, if death comes you do not flee

Damascus, land of chivalry, which was dyed
Damascus, land of glories steeped
with flowing crimson perfected by the sun.
In blood the sun pours out in floods
ذكّرتكِI reminded you الخمسَfive وand العشـرينَtwenty ثورتهاits uprising
ذاكَthat النفيرُcall to arms إلىto الدّنياthe world أنِsaying اضْطَـرِبيrise in tumult!
I reminded you of twenty-five—its uprising,
The twenty fifth reminded you of its revolt
that call to arms to the world: 'Rise in tumult!'
That awakening of the world to tremble
فُكِّيcast off! الحديدَthe iron bonds يواعِـدْكِwill arrange to meet you الأُلىthose who جَبَهـواthey opposed

Cast off the iron bonds; those will meet you who opposed
Break the iron, your sacred covenants the tribes arose
the sword's dominion with a sword grown in battle,
For the state of the sword, a sword in battle they brought
وand خلَّفُـواthey left behind قَاسـيوناًQasioun للأنـامِfor humankind غَـداًtomorrow

and left Qasioun to humankind for tomorrow,
And left for the people a harsh morrow
a mount like Sinai, bearing the Tablet and triumph.
A mount like Sinai of the Tablets and triumph
شآمُDamascus... لفظُthe word الشـآمِDamascus اهتَـزَّquivered فيin خَلَديmy mind
كماlike اهتزازُthe quivering of غصونِthe boughs of الأرزِthe cedars فيwithin الهدُبِthe eyelashes
Damascus... the word 'Damascus' quivered in my mind,
Damascus... the word Damascus shook in my heart
like the quivering of cedar boughs within the eyelashes.
Like the shaking of cedar boughs in the breezes
أنزلتُI placed حُبَّـكِyour love فيin آهِـيmy sigh فشــدَّدَهاso it intensified it
طَرِبْتُI was enraptured آهاًan 'ah'، فكُنتِso you were المجدَglory فيin طَـرَبِيmy rapture
I placed your love in my sigh, and it intensified it;
I placed your love in my sighs and intensified them
I thrilled with an 'ah,' and you were the glory in my rapture.
I was troubled in sighs, so you were glory in my trouble
