فشمّواso they smelled العطورthe perfumes بريthe scent الزهرof the flowers
فشمّوا العطور بري الزهر
They sought my place, though they understood.
So they smelled the perfumes of the flowers’ scent.
ومرَّand passed الضياءthe light ياO فاfa فهمthey understood
ومرَّ الضياء يا فا فهم
(( فماso not أدركواthey perceived غيرother than لمحa glimpse البصرof sight ))
(( فما أدركوا غير لمح البصر ))
And the light passed, O fa, and they understood.
Yet they perceived no more than a fleeting glance.
(( وقدand indeed نبحونيthey barked at me وماand not هجتهمI lampooned them ))
(( وقد نبحوني وما هجتهم ))
تعالىrose النباحthe barking، وهاجتand flared up سَقَرSaqar
تعالى النباح، وهاجت سَقَر
They barked at me, though I had not lampooned them.
The barking rose, and Saqar blazed.
فماso not ضرَّharmed نبحthe barking الكلابof the dogs سَناradiance
فما ضرَّ نبح الكلاب سَنا
(( كماjust as نبحbarked الكلبthe dog ضوءَat the light القمرof the moon ))
(( كما نبح الكلب ضوءَ القمر ))
The dogs’ barking did no harm to the radiance,
Just as a dog barked at the moon’s light.
