    Where are our days that have passed away,

    When we sought omens of companionship from the most auspicious of birds?

    And the fellowship I knew among noble people—

    How far the turns of separation carried it away!

    رُبَّ نَفعٍ أَزَالَهُ حُكمُ ضَيرِ

    Time scattered their company after they had come together;

    Many a boon was undone by harm's decree.

    Parting ruled over their hopes, so they lowered

    Numayr's gaze before separation's judgment.

    Love dealt a fatal blow to my forgetting them,

    Like al-Hajjaj's slaying of Ibn Jubayr.

    يَا تُرَى هَل لَهُم هُنالِكَ غَيرِي

    I have no companions for solace but them;

    I wonder: do they have anyone there but me?

    Whenever mention of them passes by, my heart says:

    May God remember kindly those you remembered.
