The hills by the ban-tree of al-Jarʿa were watered abundantly

by two rain-bringers: my tears and a cloud of heaven.

For tears pay love its due beside it,

and the cloud pays the lush ban-tree its due.

Breasts were emptied of hearts, just as

those private chambers were emptied of oryx and gazelles.

And I say indeed to my two companions, for

a friend is kept in reserve only for the most pressing needs:

O my two companions—at the very least, when I

call, you should both listen to my cry:

Turn aside, you two; let us rival the rain in watering the preserve,

until it sees how water pours.

And let us establish a custom in watering the dwellings,

by which we impose a rule upon the refined.

O dwelling to which my tear sprang eagerly,

until its blossoms smiled at my weeping!

I had not known, before visiting your dwelling,

that tears are the truest rain-bringers.

Oh, if only I knew—while time is ever-changing,

and the ages replace hardship with ease—

shall we meet in an embroidered garden,

    its branches and shadows fluttering,

and enjoy some of our intimacy there, if only

enough to set the watchers' eyes burning?

Where the branches raised their slender necks,

    already hung with pearls of dew;

and the jasmine's lips appeared, then kissed

on my behalf the cheek of the swaying myrtle.

And the roses on the channel's bank seemed

an inflammation afflicting a blue eye.

And the fresh blossoms amid the green hills seemed

bright stars gleaming in the green firmament.

And it was as though the breeze had come with glad tidings

to the garden, telling it of a long life:

so the garden clothed it in a fragrant robe, and scattered for it

dirhams of blossoms in a lavish scattering.

And as though it deemed the gift too slight, there hastened

the gray dove's song, offering an apology on its behalf.

And the branch dances in the ornaments of its leaves,

like a lovely maiden in a green embroidered gown.

And the daisy's mouth smiled at what it saw,

in delight, and the running water laughed aloud at it.

I would ransom that companionship, cut short and gone,

as though it had taken place in a doze.

Nothing of it remains but a memory or wishes,

    and both are a cause of long suffering;

or a note from a friend, itself a precious gift.

Letters are indeed a treasure for the discerning.

    إِنَّ الكِتَابَ تَحِيَّةُ الخُلَطاءِ

    Like al-Washqi's card, with which he greeted me;

a letter is the greeting of companions.

Before breaking its seal, I had not known

that cards are cups of tawny wine,

until I swayed my body in delight at it,

and trailed my hems in pride.

So I made that page a cup of wine,

and made its giver one of my drinking companions.

And I marveled at a dear friend who passes his friend

a cup from beyond the sea and the desert.

And I saw the gleam of its script, in all its beauty,

like embroidery adorning a beautiful woman's wrist.

By the honor of its nine signs, it has indeed

come to strengthen me against my enemies.

So with it I am like Moses, and it is like

an exposition of what is in Surat al-Isra.

Had Ibn al-Husayn's mind produced its like,

his prophethood would have been confirmed among the poets.

It is black when you behold it, yet

how many white hands of yours lie beneath it!

And I saw indeed, as slumber returned to me,

when the dark night's tresses had turned gray,

that heaven's messenger had come to me

with a gift that made my surroundings shine:

the two Farqad stars and the Pleiades, both wrapped

in a fold of white camphor.

So that page sufficed in place of its camphor,

and your composed verse in place of heaven's stars.

I swear by it, by its verse and by its prose:

it has indeed come to me, filling the eye of my hope.

And I knew that you, in bringing it forth

in words and script, defy the noblest men's powers.

    لا مَا ادَّعَاءُ الوَشيُ مِن صَنعَاءِ

    No—not the magic that Babylon practiced;

no—not the claims of embroidery from Sana'a.

And I indeed surrendered the reins to it, for it

is a problem that has baffled the eloquent.

    وَكَبَا بِكَفِّ الذِّهنِ زَندُ ذَكَائِي

    I sought a reply from my mind, but it disobeyed me;

and the firestick of my wit failed in the mind's palm.

So I abandoned its meter and its rhyme-letter,

and here forsook the custom of men of letters.

    And I sent it alif-linked and hamza-rhymed,

as a ruse for a mind harboring my refusal.

It knew your stature in learning, and came forward

out of embarrassment, walking with bashful modesty.
