أَحِبّتَناour beloved ones نَزَحنَاwe departed عَنfrom ذُراكُمyour heights
نزوحَdeparture الكَأسِthe cup عنfrom كَفّthe hand النّدِيمِthe drinking companion
Our beloved ones, we have departed from your heights,
We departed from your presence, our loved ones
as the cup departs from the drinking companion's hand.
Like wine leaving the drinker’s cup
وَوَدعتُمand you bade farewell ببرّكُمُwith your kindness وَلَكِنand yet
وَدَاعَfarewell البَدرِthe full moon لِلَيلto the night البَهِيمِpitch-black
And you bade us farewell with your kindness, yet
And you bid us farewell with kindness
as the full moon bids farewell to the pitch-black night.
Like the moon's farewell to the gloomy night
فَكَانَso it was مَحَلthe place هَذَاthis البرkindness مِناto us
محلthe place البرءhealing فيin جسمthe body السقيمِthe sick person
Thus this kindness was to us
So this kindness took the place for us
what healing is to a sick person's body.
Of health in a sick man’s body
وماand not كانwas الفراقparting لناfor us اختياراًa choice
And parting was not our choice.
And parting was not our choice
