يَفنَىwastes away عَلَيكَfor you صَبَابَةًwith yearning وغَرَاماand passion
O namesake of him who instituted hospitality, be gentle with one
My blamer, be gentle with one whose youth
Who wastes away for you in yearning and passion.
Is wasted on you in passion and desire!
أَناI ضَيفُa guest حُبِّكَyour love فَاصطَنِعنيso show me kindness إِنَّهindeed, it is so
ضَيفُthe guest الهَوَىof love يَستَوجِبُdeserves الإِكرَاماhonor
I am a guest of your love, so show me kindness; indeed,
I am a lover guest, so show me respect—
The guest of love deserves honor.
A love guest deserves to be held in high honor.
لَمّاwhen نَظَرتُI gazed upon نُجومَstars خيلانٍbeauty marks بَدَتappeared
فِيon صَحنِthe expanse وَجنَتِكَyour cheek استفَدتُI gained سَقَاماsickness
When I gazed upon stars of beauty marks that appeared
When I saw the stars of Kheelan in the yard
On the expanse of your cheek, I gained sickness.
Of your abode, I gained but sickness from that water.
أَفنَيتَyou destroyed جِسمَthe body الصَّبِّof the lovesick lover شَوقاًwith longing مِثلَمَاjust as
أَفنَىdestroyed سَمِيُّكَyour namesake قَبلَكَbefore you الأَصنَامَاthe idols
You destroyed the lover's body with longing, just as
You have wasted my young body with longing
Your namesake destroyed the idols before you.
As your idolatry wasted your idols before.
يَاO زَهرَةًflower سَكَنَتdwelt فُؤَادِيin my heart غضّةًtender
أَنّىhow تَبَوّأتَyou took as your dwelling الجَحِيمَHell كِمَاماas a calyx
O tender flower that made its home in my heart,
O blossom that dwelt in my heart while still a bud!
How have you made Hell your calyx?
How did you make hell your abode and shelter?
حَتّىso that كَأَنَّas though الحُبَّLove قالَsaid لأَضلُعِيto my ribs
يَاO نَارُfire كُنbe بَرداًcoolness لَهُfor him وَسَلامَاand peace
So that it was as though Love said to my ribs:
Love said to my ribs, “O fire, be coolness
“O fire, be coolness and peace for him.”
And safety for him!”—such torture I suffered.
