أَعِذَارَهُO his cheek-down رِفقاًgently عَلَيهِwith him فَقَدfor indeed
صَدَرَdeparted الصِّباyouth غَضبانَangry عَنكَfrom you أَسِفsorrowful
O his cheek-down, be gentle with him, for
Accept his excuses gently for he
Youth has departed from you, angry and sorrowful.
Left in anger though youth's spring was new.
كَيفَhow اِنبَرَيتَyou assailed لِنُونِagainst the letter nūn وَجنَتِهِhis cheek
فَمَحَوتَهاso you erased it وَكَتَبتَand you wrote لامَthe letter lām أَلِفthe letter alif
How did you assail the nūn of his cheek,
How could you scold Nun for her words -
Then erase it and write a lām-alif?
Deleting them yet keeping just a clue?
فَكَأَنَّهاso it is as though it نَهيٌa prohibition لِعاشِقِهِfor his lover
لاdo not تَلتَفِتturn toward بَدراًa full moon جَنىsinned فَكُسِفand so was eclipsed
So it is as though it forbids his lover:
As if to warn all ardent lovers:
“Do not turn toward a full moon that sinned and was eclipsed.”
"Turn not to moons; their Fullness fades from view."
