سَقَىmay water مَضربَthe encampment الخَيمَاتِof the tents مِنat عَلَمَيthe two landmarks of نَجدِNajd
أَسَحُّthe heavier-pouring غَمَامَيof the two clouds of أَدمُعِيmy tears وَالحَيَاand rain الرَغدِabundant
May the tenting-ground at Najd's two landmarks be watered
He gave drink to the abode of tents from the standards of Najd
by the heavier-pouring of the two clouds: my tears and abundant rain.
I diffuse my clouds and my tears and the plentiful life
وَقَدand indeed كَانَthere was فِيin دَمعِيmy tears كفَاءٌenough وَإِنَّمَاbut only
يُجَفِّفُهَاdries them مَاwhat بِالضُّلوعِwithin the ribs مِنَof الوَقدِburning
My tears were indeed enough; it is only
And my tears used to suffice, though
the burning within my ribs that dries them away.
What is in the ribs dries them from the burning
فَإِنso if فَتَرتabates نَارُthe fire الضُّلُوعِof the ribs هُنَيهَةًfor a moment
فَسَوفَthen, in time تَرَىyou see تَفجِيرَهُits unleashing لِلحَيَاof the rain العِدِّinexhaustible
So if the fire within my ribs abates a moment,
So if the fire of the ribs rests for a moment
you will see it bring inexhaustible rain gushing forth.
You will see its outburst to the intense enmity
وَإِنand if ضَنَّwithholds صَوبُthe downpour المُزنِof rainclouds يَوماًone day فَأَدمُعِيthen my tears
تَنوبُtake its place كَمَاjust as نَابَstood in الجَمِيعُthe many عَنِfor الفَردِthe single one
And if the rainclouds withhold their downpour one day, my tears
And if the arrows of sadness fail one day, so my tears
will take its place, as the many stand in for the one.
Take turns like all failed for one
وَإِنand if هَطَلاboth poured يوماًone day بِساحَتِهَاupon its grounds مَعاًtogether
فَأروَاهُمَاthen the more thirst-quenching of the two مَاwhat صَابَfell مِنfrom مُنتَهَىthe utmost الوُدِّlove
And if both pour together one day upon its grounds,
And if they both pour one day in its yard
the more thirst-quenching of the two is what falls from the utmost love.
Their watering reached the utmost affection
أَرَىI see زَفرَتِيmy sigh تُذكَىbeing kindled وَدَمعِيَand my tears يَنهَمِيstream down
نَقِيضَينِtwo opposites قَاماboth provided بالصِلاءfire's warmth وَبالوردِand water to drink
I see my sigh kindled and my tears pouring down—
I see my sigh rekindled and my tears gushing
two opposites, providing fire's warmth and water to drink.
As two opposites stood for night and roses
فَهَلso, is there بالذِيin what أَبصَرتُمُyou have seen أَوor سَمِعتُمُyou have heard
غَمامٌa cloud بِلاwithout أُفقٍa horizon وَبَرقٌand lightning بِلاwithout رَعدِthunder
Is there, in what you have seen or heard,
Is there in what you saw or heard
a cloud without a horizon, and lightning without thunder?
A cloud without horizon, or lightning without thunder
لِيَfor me اللَّهُGod كَمhow often أَهذِيI rave بِنَجدٍabout Najd وَأَهلِهاand its people
وَمَاand not لِيfor me بِهَاwith it إِلاexcept التَّوَهُّمُimagining مِنany عَهدِacquaintance
God help me! How often I rave about Najd and its people,
Woe to me! How I rave about Najd and its people
though I have no acquaintance with it beyond mere imagining.
And I have nothing for it but fancying from an era
وَمَاand not بِيin me إِلَىfor نَجدٍNajd نُزُوعٌlonging وَلاnor هَوَىlove
خَلاexcept أَنَّهُمthat they شَنُّواshowered القَوَافِيthe rhymes عَلَىupon نَجدِNajd
I have neither longing for Najd nor love,
I have no tendency or love for Najd
save that they have showered their rhymes upon Najd.
Except that they unleashed rhymes about Najd
وَجَاءُواand they came بِدَعوَىwith a claim حَسَّنَadorned الشِّعرُpoetry زورَهاits falsehood
فَصَارَتso it became لَهُمfor them فِيin مُصحَفِthe scripture الحُبِّof love كَالحَمدِlike al-Hamd (Praise)
They have made a claim whose falsehood poetry adorned,
And they came with a claim that poetry embellished its fraudulence
so it became for them like al-Hamd in the scripture of love.
So for them it became like praise in the scripture of love
شُغِلنَاwe were kept busy بِأَبنَاءِwith the sons الزَّمانِof the age عَنِaway from الهَوَىlove
وَلِلدرعِand for chain mail وَقتٌa time لَيسَnot يَحسُنُis fitting لِلبُردِfor a cloak
We have been kept from love by the sons of our age;
We were busy with the children of time from love
and mail has its hour, when a cloak is out of place.
And time for armor is not good for the coat
إِلىto اللَّهِGod أَشكُوI complain of رَيبَthe vicissitudes دَهرِيof my fate يُغصُّit chokes بِيme
نَوَائِبُهُits calamities قَدindeed أَلجَمَتhave bridled أَلسُنَthe tongues العَدِّof counting
To God I complain of my fate's vicissitudes, which choke me;
To God I complain of the harm of my time choking me
its calamities have bridled the tongues that would count them.
Its calamities have muzzled the tongues of enmity
لَقَدindeed صَرفَتthey gave حُكمَdominion الفُؤَادِof the heart إِلَىto الهَوَىpassion
كَمَاjust as فَوَّضتthey entrusted أَمرَthe affairs الجُفُونِof the eyelids إِلَىto السُّهدِsleeplessness
They have surely given passion dominion over my heart,
Indeed it has turned the rule of my heart to love
just as they entrusted my eyelids to sleeplessness.
As it entrusted the matter of eyelids to sleep
أَمَاdo they not تَتَوَقَّىbeware وَيحَهاwoe to them أَنlest أُصِيبَهَاI strike them
بِدَعوَةِwith a prayer مَظلُومٍof one wronged عَلَىagainst جورِهَاtheir injustice يُعدِيbrings redress
Do they not beware—woe to them!—lest I strike them
Doesn’t it fear, woe to it, that I pray against it
with a wronged man's prayer that brings redress against their injustice?
With the supplication of a wronged one, exceeding in his injustice
أَمَاhas it not رَاعَهَاalarmed them أنthat زَحزَحَتthey drove away عَنfrom أَكَارِمٍnoble men
فِرَاقُهُمُparting from them دَلَّguided القُلُوبَthe hearts عَلَىto حَدِّيmy sharp edge
Does it not trouble them that they drove me from noble men,
Didn't it notice that it alienated the generous
whose parting has revealed my sharp edge to hearts?
Whose absence guides hearts to my limit
أعاتِبُهَاI reproach them فِيهمover those men فَتَزدَادُso they grow قسوَةًin hardness
أجدكَby your earnestness هَلhave عَايَنتَyou witnessed لِلحَجَرِof the stone الصَّلدِsolid
I reproach them over those men, and they grow harder.
I reproach it about them, so it increases in harshness
Tell me in earnest: have you seen the like in solid stone?
Did you witness any softness for solid rock
أمَاdo they not عَلِمَتknow أَنَّthat القَسَاوَةَhardness نَافَرَتis alien to
طِبَاعَthe natures بَنِيof the sons الآدَابِof letters إِلاexcept مِنَamong الرَّدِّthe base
Do they not know that hardness is alien
Doesn’t it know that harshness has repelled
to the nature of men of letters, except the base among them?
The disposition of the cultured except from response
إذاif وَعَدَتthey promise يَوماًone day بتَألِيفِto reunite شَملِنَاour company
فَألمِمthen turn بِعُرقوبٍto ʿUrqub وَمَاand what سَنَّhe established مِنof وَعدِpromises
If ever they promise to reunite us,
If it promises one day to unite us
then turn to ʿUrqub and the precedent he set in promises.
Then fulfill with shackles and the like of a promise
وإِنand if عَاهَدَتthey pledge أَنthat لاnot تُؤَلِّفَthey bring together بَينَنَاbetween us
تَذكَّرتI recall آثارَthe deeds السَّمَوأَلِof al-Samaw'al فِيin العَهدِpledge-keeping
And if they pledge not to bring us together,
And if it vows never to reconcile us
I recall al-Samaw'al's deeds of fidelity.
I recall the traces of poison in the covenant
خَلِيلَيَّmy two friends أَعنِيI mean النَّظمَverse والنَّثرَand prose أَرسِلاyou two, send forth
جِيادَكُماyour steeds, you two فِيinto حَلبَةِthe racecourse الشُّكرِof thanks والحَمدِand praise
My two friends—I mean verse and prose—send forth
My two friends, prose and poetry, send
your steeds into the racecourse of thanks and praise.
Your steeds in the race of gratitude and praise
قِفاyou two, halt ساعِدَانِيyou two, help me إِنَّهُit is indeed حقُّthe due صَاحِبٍof a friend
بَرِيءfree جِمامthe pools الكَتمِof secrecy مِنfrom كَدَرِthe murk الحقدِof rancor
Halt and help me, you two: this is the due of a friend
Support me, for it is the right of an innocent friend
whose hidden pools are free of rancor's murk.
Free of the bridle of concealment from the harm of hatred
بأيَّةِby whatever means مَاfor emphasis قَيَّدتُماyou two have bound أَلسُنَthe tongues الوَرىof humankind
بِذِكرِيto my name فَيَاthen O وَيحَwoe to الكِنَانِيal-Kinani وَالكِندِيand al-Kindi
By whatever means you two have bound people's tongues
With what have you tied the tongues of mankind
to my name—then woe to al-Kinani and al-Kindi!
With mentioning me, so woe to the silent and the lampooner
فَأَينَwhere then بَيانيmy expressive power أَوor فَأَينَwhere then فَصَاحَتِيmy eloquence
إِذاif لَمdo not أُعِدI repeat ذِكرَthe mention الأَكَارِمِof noble men أَوor أُبدِيI make known
Where, then, is my expressive power, or where my eloquence,
So where is my eloquence or where is my articulation
if I do not repeat the mention of noble men or make it known?
If I do not repeat the mention of the generous or express
فَيَاso O خَاطِريmy poetic mind وَفِّgive in full الثّنَاءَpraise حُقوقَهُits rights
وَصِفهُand describe it كَمَاas قَالُواthey say سِوَارٌa bracelet عَلَىupon زَندِa wrist
So, my poetic mind, give praise its full due,
Oh my mind, fulfill the praise its rights
and portray it, as they say, as a bracelet on a wrist.
And describe it as they said, a bracelet on a wrist
وَلاand do not تُلزِمَنّيburden me بِالتَّكَاسُلِthrough sloth حُجَّةًgrounds for reproach
تُشَبِّبُهَاkindles it نَارُthe fire الحَيَاءِof shame عَلَىupon خَدِّيmy cheek
And do not, through sloth, burden me with a reproach
And do not oblige me with laziness an argument
that the fire of shame would kindle upon my cheek.
Which the fire of shame kindles on my cheek
ثَكِلتُmay I be bereaved of القَوافيrhymes وَهيَand they are أَبناءُthe children خاطِريof my poetic mind
وَغَيَّبَهاand may it bury them الإِقحامُstrained composition عَنِّيَaway from me فيin لَحدِa grave
May I be bereaved of rhymes—the children of my mind—
I have weaned the rhymes and they are the sons of my mind
and may strained composition bury them away from me in a grave,
And preoccupation has distanced them from me in the grave
لَئِنsurely if لَمdo not أَصُغI fashion زهرَthe radiant ones النُّجومof the stars قِلادَةًinto a necklace
وَآتِand I come بِبَدرِwith the full moon التَمِّat fullness واسِطَةَas the central gem العِقدِof the necklace
if I do not fashion the radiant stars into a necklace
If I do not wear the flowers of stars as a necklace
and bring the full moon as the necklace's central gem,
And bring the full moon as a clasp for the necklace
إِلَىuntil أَنthat يَقولَsay السَّامِعونَthe listeners لِرِفقَتيto my companions
نَعَمyes طارَflew ذاكَthat السَقطُthe spark عَنfrom ذلِكَthat الزَندِfire-stick
until those who hear say to my companions:
Until the listeners say to my group
'Yes, that spark flew from that fire-stick.'
Yes, that fallen one rose from that feeble one
أُحَيِّيI salute بِرَيّاهاwith its fragrance جَنابَthe court اِبنِson of سالِمٍSalim
فَيَقرَعُso it knocks فيهِthere البابَthe door فيin زَمَنِthe season الوَردِof roses
I salute Ibn Salim's court with its fragrance,
I greet with its banner the side of Ibn Salim
so it knocks at the door there in the season of roses.
So he knocks on the door at the time of returning
